of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation


JOHN B.6 MAXFIELD, Junior (John5, Samuel4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at Craftsbury, Orleans County, Vermont, on 31 March 1841 a son of John B. Maxfield and his wife Amanda Barker . He died at Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa, on 21 June 1916.[1] He married at Hardin, Clayton County, Iowa, on 2 April 1868 SARAH JANE INGALLS.[2] She was born at Quebec on 26 July 1845, and died at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, on 16 October 1881.[3]

John grew up on a farm in Craftsbury, the sixth of seven children. According to Vermont records, John Maxfield and "S. J." had a child at Hyde Park, Lamoille County, Vermont, in June of 1864. According to this record, John Maxfield was a farmer, born in England.[4] There is no further record of this child.

John B. Maxfield fought in the Civil War from 27 August 1864 to 21 June 1865. He was in Company I of the Vermont First Cavalry Regiment.[5] This unit participated in the seige of Petersburg, Virginia, from June 1864 to March 25, 1865, and was at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.

Following the War, John and Sarah setteld in Iowa, where they married and had a child in 1868. They were found in New Hampton Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa, in every federal and state census from 1870 to 1900.[6] Sarah died in 1881 at the age of 36. Their son Herbert married in 1888. The 1905 Kansas state census found J. B. Maxfield at Humboldt, Allen County Kansas, laborer, in the household of L. K. and J. M. Osgood.[7]

John Maxfield lived breifly at Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, and West Union, Fayette County, Iowa, before being admitted to the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown on 23 March 1916, where he died.[8]

John B Maxfield, Junior, and his wife Sarah Ingalls had the following children:

  1. CHARLES M.7 MAXFIELD b. at Hyde Park on 12 June 1864.[9]
  2. HERBERT NATHAN7 MAXFIELD b. at Monona, Clayton County, on7 August 1868.
