Sixth Generation

ABRAHAM SISSON TUCKER6 MAXFIELD (Abraham5, Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 19 December 1812, to Abraham Russell Maxfield and his wife Sylvia Tucker.[1] He died there on 21 September 1870.[2] He married there on 27 July 1856 ABBY ANN KING,[3] who was born at Berkley or Fall River, Bristol County, 3 January 1836, a child of Isaac and Peace (Hathaway) King, and died at Westport, Bristol County, on 27 June 1930.[4] Abby married second at Dartmouth on 2 September 1871 WILLIAL MAXIM,[5] who was born at Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 3 May 1829, a child of David and Mary (Jones) Maxim, and died at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 27 April 1902.[6]

Abraham engaged in both whaling and agriculture. On 12 May 1834 he was part of the crew of the Grand Turk, on a tour of the South Atlantic. He was described as 22, from Dartmouth, 5' 5" light complexion. From 16 August 1841 to 4 September 1843 he was a seamen on the Columbus, which set out from Fairhaven, Bristol County, to the Indian Ocean.[7] However he was described as a farmer on the 1840 and 1855 censuses, and laborer on the 1860, 1865 and 1870 censuses. His residence remained Dartmouth.

The fourth of eight children, the 1840 Census reported him as a household of one, engaged in agriculture.[8]

In 1855 Abraham S. Maxfield, 42, farmer, was reported at Dartmouth in the household of William P. Peck, 41, farmer, his wife Mary A. Peck, 36, their children William B., 13, Charles, 6, and Harriet Downing, 11.[9]

Abraham and Abby married in 1856. Abraham was 46, Abby 20. The 1860 Census reported Abraham, 48, laborer, Abby, 24, and their son Benjamin, 3, at Dartmouth (North Dartmouth Post Office).[10] The 1865 Census reported them at Dartmouth with three children, Benjamin, 8, Edward, 3, and Charles, 1.[11]

The 1870 Census reported this family in Dartmouth, North Dartmouth Post Office, as follows:[12]

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Maxfield, Abraham S. T. 56 M W common laborer MA
Maxfield, Abby Ann 33 F W keeps house MA
Maxfield, Benjamin T. 13 W W works on farm MA school
Maxfield, Edward C. 8 M W at home MA school
Maxfield, Charles O. H. 5 M W at home MA school

Abraham and Abby had a fourth child, Sylvia, in 1868, however she lived only nine months.

Abraham died in 1870, age 57, after only 14 years of marriage. Eight days after his death, their fifth child, also called Sylvia, was born. This left Abby a young widow of 34 with children aged 13, 8, 6, and a newborn. A year later Abby married William Maxim. He was 42, she 35. It is unclear what happened to this second marriage. The 1880 Census reported William Maxim, 51, married, living with his mother, Mary Maxim,[13] 80; but Abby is not to be found. In the 1900 Census they lived in different locations and were both listed as widowed.[14] Whatever the circumstnces, the marriage didn't last.

Of the children, Benjamin married in 1879, Sylvia in 1886 at the age of 15. The other two sons remained single.

The 1880 Census reported Benjamin Maxfield, 23, teamster, living at Fall River with his wife Clara, 19.[15]

The 1900 Census reported Abby Maxfield living with her daughter Sylvia's family at Westport, Bristol County:[16]

The record further stated that Silvie and George had been married fourteen years, and that she had seven children six of whom were living. The age of Mary is an error.

The 1900 Census also reported Benjamin Maxfield, 43, fisherman, living at Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island, with his wife Clara, 39. She had one child who did not survive.[17] Edward Maxfield, 37, was a farm laborer in the household of George and Lizzie Petty of Westport.[18]

The 1910 Census reported Abbie A. Maxfield, 74, on Sodom Road, Westport, with her daughter and family, George Wood, 59, farmer, Silvia, 39, Milton, 22, laborer on home farm, Mary, 19, George, 16, laborer on home farm, Albert, 14, Carlton, 12, Carrie, 7, and Abbie Maxfield, mother-in-law, 74, widow. According to this record Abbie had six children. four of whom were living.[19] Edward continued to work as a hired man on the George and Lizzie Petty farm in Westport.[20] Charles Maxfield, 46, single, lived on Reed Road, Dartmouth, where he was a farmer of lumber. His housekeeper was Maud McKenzie, 45, widow.[21]

The 1920 Census reported Abbie Maxfield, 84, still living with her daughter and son-in law at Westport. By this time the Wood family had shrunk, with only Carrie still at home.[22] Edward, 58, was still a hired man on the farm of George andc Lizzie Petty of Westport.[23] Charles, 56, was farming on Divisioin Road, Dartmouth, with the samed housekeeper.[24]

The 1930 Census found Abbie Maxfield, 94, living with her daughter, Silvia Wood, 59, who was by this time a widow. Living with them was a nurse, Adeline Sabins.[25] Benjamin Maxfield, 73, widowed, was the master pilot of a steam vessel, and lived on Bluff Avenue, Tiverton.[26] Edward, 68, continued to board with George and Lizzie Petty.[27]

Abby (King) Maxfield died on 1930 at the age of 94 from bronchial pneumonia.[28] Benjamin died at Fall River in 1933 from a pulmonary embolism among other ailments.[29]

The 1940 Census found Edward, 78, still boarding with the Petty family,[30] and Charles living with his sister Silvie Wood at Westport.[31] Edward would die in 1946, Charles in 1948, and Silvie in 1965.
