DAVID6 MAXFIELD (perhaps Isaac5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Vermont about 1803-4,[1] perhaps a child of Isaac Maxfield and his wife Phebe Hill. He died on 8 January 1888.[2] He married LAVISA SANFORD Her name is sometimes written Louisa and sometimes Lavica. She Was born at New York about 1803-4,[3] and died at Richmond, Shawano County, Wisconsin on 13 June 1881.[4]
Who were the parents of David Maxfield? He was born in Vermont and according to the 1880 census his parents were born at Vermont. He resided at Saint Lawrence County, New York, in the 1830 and 1850 censuses. All of this points to an origin with the Maxfields of Franklin and Chittenden Counties, Vermont. In other words, he is probably a grandson of David Maxfield (born 1741). But which of that David's sons is his father?
The 1830 census reported the David Maxfield family at Gouvernour, Saint Lawrence County, New York, consisting of a man and a woman between the ages of 20 and 29, and a male child under 5.[5] This corresponds to David ans Lavisa and son William.
The 1850 census reported this family at Macomb Town, Saint Lawrence County:[6]

Although the census taker recorded the name of the head of household as "Daniel," all of the family data corresponds to our David.
According to family tradition, the whole family traveled by boat from New York state to Wisconsin, traveling up the Wolf River to Shawano.[7]
By 1860 the family had moved to the Town of Richmond, Shawano County, Wisconsin, where the David Maxfield household was recorded by the census taker:[8]

Daughter Mary had married James Levi Whitehouse by 1856 and moved to Richmond, where they lived in 1860 with three children.[9]
The 1870 census recorded the family at the same town, consisting of David, 66, a farmer, Levisa, 66, and Sarah, 27.[10] Daughter Mary also lived in that town with her husband and four children.[11] William Frederick "Fred" Maxfield, who married in 1862, was reported in the town of Hartland, Shawano County, with his wife and five children.[12] Daughter Elizabeth had also married in the 1860s, and lived at Richmond with her husband, Thomas Grimmer, and three children.[13]
William Frederick Maxfield moved to Nebraska som time between 1876 and 1879. In that latter year his wife died, and the family appeared to have broken up. The 1880 Census reported David and Lovica ("Louisa") living with daughter Mary's family at Richmond:[14]
