Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

SANFORD6 MAXFIELD (Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont, about 1812-3,[1] a child of Henry and Minerva Maxfield. He died at Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont, on 30 August 1892.[2] He married before 1845 (birth of child) HANNAH MOREHOUSE born at Essex, Chittenden County, Vermont, on 4 November 1824, a child of Homer and Lucinda Morehouse, and died on 15 August 1900.[3]

Sanford Maxfield served in the Army from 21 February 1840 to 21 February 1845. He was a private, stationed at Fort Preble, near Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. During this time the "Aroostook War," a border dispute between Maine and New Brunswick, was resolved without a fight. Sanford was described as having blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5' 11" a blacksmith.[4]

On 24 August 1846 Sanford and Rimmon Maxfield, sons of Henry and Minerva Maxfield, transfered a half lot in Milton. In consideration the Town discharged Sanford and Rimmon from a suit pending in Chittenden County. Sanford and Rimmon were released from liability to support parents.[5]

The 1850 census reported this family in Westford, Chittenden County. It consisted of Stanford, 37, a farmer, Hannah, 25, Jeanette, 4, and Hannah Holmes, 69, all born at Vermont.[6]

The 1860 census reported this family twice, at Westford (Sanford, 47, blacksmith, Hannah, 35, Heman, 4, and Ellen M., 12), and at Milton, Vermont (Sanford, 45, day laborer, Hannah, 40, and Heman, 3).[7] Ellen was probably a niece, the daughter of Rimmon. There is no further mention of a daughter Jeanette.

The 1870 census did not report Sanford, but reported Hannah Maxfield, age 45, and Lucy, age 8, in the town of Westford, Essex Junction Post Office.[8] The immediate previous household contained Hannah's parents, Homer and Lucinda Morehouse, with Homer Maxfield, age 14.[9] "Homer Maxfield" was probably Heman Maxfield, son of Sanford and Hannah.

The 1880 census reported this family in Westford. It is unusual, in that it lists Hannah as the head of the household, and Stanford as her husband. Hannah was 56, Stanford 69. A third member of the household was Hannah's mother, Lucinda Morehouse, now a widow, age 77. All three of these persons, and all their parents, were born in Vermont.[10] This census reported Heman Maxfield at Westford, 23, a farm laborer, in the household of Manly and Emeline Holmes.[11]

Sanford P. Maxfield died from apoplexy in 1892 at the Brattleboro Retreat, a mental health facility, and is buried in the Retreat's Cemetery.[12]

The 1900 census reported Hannah Maxfield at Milton living with her daughter and son-in-law as follows:[13]

Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
Nay, Elisha head W M Jul 1855 M VT VT VT U.S. mail carrier
Nay, Lucy V. wife W F Feb 1861 M VT VT VT
Maxfield, Hannah M. mother-in-law W F Nov 1824 M VT VT VT
Morehouse, Daniel uncle W M May 1826 WD VT VT VT farm laborer

This census record reported that Hannah had been married for 54 years, and had two children, both living. Elisha and Lucy had been married for 20 years, and reported two children, one living. Son Heman Maxfield, who married in 1880, was reported in 1900 at Barre Town, Washington County, Vermont, carpenter, with his wife and son.[14] Hannah (Morehouse) Maxfield died two months aftrer that census.

Sanford Maxfield and his wife Hannah Morehouse had the following children:

  1. JEANETTE7 MAXFIELD b. at Vermont about 1845-6;[15] no further information.
