ALFRED6 MAXFIELD (Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Milton, Chittenden County, Vermont, on 1 June 1829, the eleventh of eleven children of Henry and Minerva Maxfield. He died at Burlington, Chittenden County, on 19 March 1895.[1] He married at Milton on 9 February 1861 MARY JANE HOLMES, a child of Manly Holmes and Mary J. Lamphere.[2] She was born at Westford, Chittenden County, on 26 July 1843 and died at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 9 December 1916.[3]
In the 1850 census Alfred was a farmer, age 21, living at Milton with his parents, listed as paupers, in the household of Alfred and Jane Copper.[4]
I have not found Alfred Maxfield in the 1860 Census. He married in 1861 at tha age of 31; his bride was 17. Alfred was consistently called a shoemaker in his marrige record and in all future records.
The 1870 census reported this family at the town of Westford, Essex Junction Post Office. The family included Alfred, age 40, boot and shoe maker, Mary Jane, 26, keeping house, Elmer E. [Elvira], 8, at school, Effie L. [Ethel], 5, at school, and Dora I., 2. All were born at Vermont.[5]
The 1880 census reported the growing family at Westford, spelling a few names differently. It listed Alfred, 51, shoemaker, Jane, wife, 36, keeping house, Armina, daughter, 18, employed as a servant, Ethel, daughter, 15, Dora, daughter, 7, Arthur, son, 7, and Charley, son, 2. All family members and all of their parents were born at Vermont.[6]
In 1882 Alfred Maxfield had a custom shoe shop on Main Street, Winooski, Chittenden County, and lived in Burlington.[7]
Son Arthur died in 1891 at the age of 18 from pneumonia.[8] Alfred died in 1895 at the age of 65 from La Grippe.[9]
Ethel married in 1886, Elvira married in 1892, and Dora married in 1893. The 1900 Census reported widow Mary Maxfield, 56, living at Methuen, Essex County, with her youngest child, Charles, 21, a day laborer.[10]
Charles died in 1902 from pneumonia.[11] In 1910 widow Mary Maxfield, 66, resided at Burlington with her daughter Ethel, 45, and Ethel's second husband Charles Shambs, 39, machine hand in a bobbin shop.[12]
Widow Mary Maxfield died in 1916 at Andover from paralysis agitans[13] (Parkinson's Disease).
Alfred Maxfield and his wife Mary Jane Holmes had the following children:
