Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation


JOSIAH6 MAXFIELD (James5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Union, Lincoln County, Maine, on 23 August 1812, a child of James Batchelder Maxfield and his wife Hannah Batchelder,[1] and died at New Boston, Mercer County, Illinois, in 1861.[2] He married at Mercer County on 9 May 1844 SARAH SWAFFORD,[3] sometimes called "Sallie," daughter of John Swafford. She was born at Indiana about 1826-7.[4] Sarah married second at Mercer County on 24 October 1867 GEORGE WESLEY.[5]

Josiah travelled west with his parents, to Indiana in 1838, and on to Illinois in 1840. He settled in New Boston.

This family was reported in the 1850 Census in New Boston Township:[6]

Cyrus Maxfield was Josiah's younger brother.

The 1860 Census reported this family at New Boston Township. Josiah Maxfield, 47, was a wagon maker. The household included Sally, 32, Otis, 10, Oscar, 7, and Esther, 5, all Maxfields, and Mary Jay, 17.[7]

Josiah died in 1860 leaving his widow with children ages 13, 11, 8, and 6. Six years later widow Sarah (Swafford) Maxfield married George Wesley of Black Hawk, Iowa. I have no further information on Sarah.

Otis P. Maxfield married at Mercer County in 1849 Martha Strong. The 1880 Census reported them at Aledo, Mercer County. O. P. Maxfield, 32, was a baker, Mattie worked in a restaurant. The household included Maty Strong, 13, described as an assistant.[8] The 1900 Census reported Otis P. Maxfield, born May 1849, proprietor of a boarding house at Trout Lake, San Miguel County, Colorado. With him was his wife, Mattie, born December 1859, a servant, and seven boarders.[9] The 1910 Census reported O. P. Maxfield, 60, in a rooming house in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.[10] The 1920 Census reported Otis P. Maxfield, 70, and his wife Martha S. Maxfield, 60, in San Diego, San Diego County, California.[11] They died at San Diego in 1925 and 1826 respectively. I find no record of any children.

Josiah and Sarah (Swafford) Maxfield had the following children:

  2. OTIS P.7 MAXFIELD b. at New Boston on 14 May 1849, d. at San Diego on 26 November 1925;[13] m. at Mercer County on 22 November 1876 MARTHA STRONG of Keithsburg, Mercer County[14] b. at Illinois on 26 December 1854, d. at San Diego County on 17 May 1926.[15]
  3. WILLIAM7 MAXFIELD b. about 1849,[16] d. before 1850 (not in census)
  4. ZILAH7 MAXFIELD b. about 1851, d. in infancy.[17]
  5. OSCAR WALDO7 MAXFIELD b. at New Boston on 13 September 1852
  6. ESTHER7 MAXFIELD b. at Illinois about 1854-5,[18] d. after 1860 (in census).
