Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

NATHANIEL WILLIAM6 MAXFIELD (James5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Union, Lincoln County (now Knox County), Maine, on 23 June 1821.[1] His parents were James Batchelder Maxfield and his wife Hannah Batchelder. He died on 6 January 1898.[2] He married at Peoria County, Illinois, on 3 November, 1847, DEBORAH ALBRO.[3] She was born in New York on 7 February 1830,[4] and was still living in the 1920 Census.

The eighth of eleven children, Nathaniel grew up at Union. When he was seventeen he moved west with his family. They first moved to Perry County, Indiana, where his mother died when he was eighteen. With his father he moved to Illinois, where his father died when Nathaniel was nineteen. Nathaniel was twenty-six, Deborah seventeen when they married.

The 1850 Census reported the Nathaniel Maxfield family in Stark County, Illinois, as follows:[5]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Nathaniel Maxfield 28 M wagon maker Me.
Deborah Maxfield 18 F NY
James A. Maxfield 1 M Ill.
Polly A. Albro 16 F Ohio school

This family was also reported in the 1850 Census in Knox County, Illinois. There Deborah was reported 19 years old, Polly Albro is called Mary Albro, and in a separate household at the same address are S. C. Albro (male), 32, wagon maker, and May T. Albro, 8. Stark County is where some of his cousins, including Oren Maxfield, settled.

The 1860 census reported this family at Salem Township, Marion County, Illinois, consisting of Nathaniel Maxfield, 36, waggon maker, Sabra Maxfield, 38, James, 11, Jake, 9, Sarah, 7, and Nora, 2.[6] The census taker may have had difficulty getting their correct names: Sabra is elsewhere called Deborah, Jake is Jasper, and Nora is Susan.

This family was reported in the 1870 Census in Paris Township, Jackson Post Office, Linn County, Kansas, although the name of the head of the family is mis-stated:[7]

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Maxfield, Martin 49 M W farmer $500 ME
Maxfield, Debron 39 F W keeping house NY
Maxfield, James A. 21 M W farmer IL

Maxfield, Susan V. 10 F W at home IL school
Maxfield, Mary A. 8 F W at home IL school
Maxfield, Ida S. 5 F W at home
Maxfield, Nathaniel D. 2 M W at home IL

Daughter Sarah was also reported in the same township and post office, age 16, in the household of Cyrus and Huldah Goodwin.[8]

They evidently soon moved back to Illinois, where Jasper married in 1872, James and Sarah in 1873, and Susan in 1877.

The parents and remaining children moved to Nebraska, where they were reported at Cuming City, Washington County, in the 1880 Census:[9]

However James, age 31, was also reported at Toulon, Stark County, with his wife Belle, 26. James was called a station hand,[10] evidently working for the railroad. Jasper had died in 1878, at the age of 26, his wife died in 1882. Sarah, 26, lived in 1880 at Cuming City, with her husband, Albert Barton, farmer, and their children John, 6, Fred, 4, and George, 2.[11] Based on the birth places of the children, they had moved from Illinois to Nebraska about 1875-8. Susan, 22, was reported in 1880 living with her husband, also her first cousin, Charles M. Maxfield, 31, at Blair, Washington County, with their daughter, and her father-in-law.[12]

Nathaniel William Maxfield died in 1898. In 1900 widow Deborah Maxfield was living with her son-in-law and daughter, Albert and Sarah Barton, at Crawford, Dawes County, Nebraska, as reported in the Census:[13]

James A. Maxfield, born November 1848, day laborer, was reported in 1900 at Toulon, with his wife, Mary, born February 1854 at Pennsylvania. The household included two boarders.[14] Susan died in 1899. Mary, who married in 1882, in 1900 lived at Crawford with her husband Less Roberts, born July 1846 in Sweden, proprietor of a blacksmith shop. Less came to America in 1869. Their household included their children, Effie C. Roberts, 17, Kesten A. J. Roberts, 15, Leon Roberts, 13, and Rulo G. Roberts, 8. All children were born at Nebraska.[15] Ida, daughter of Nathaniel and Deborah, also married in 1882. She was reported at Trunk Butte, Dawes County, with her husband, George K. Aird, 54, farmer, a native of Canada, and their children, Daisy, 17, Thirza, 15, Livy, 12, Elsie, 7, and Ralph, 2.[16] Son Nathaniel D. Maxfield, 31, was reported in the 1900 Census at Eureka Township, Valley County, Nebraska, with his wife and four children.

In the 1910 Census widow Debbie Maxfield, 56, was living at Edith Precinct, Blaine County, Nebraska, with her daughter, Sarah Barton, 56, Sarah's husband, Albert Barton, 61, farmer, and the Barton's adopted daughter, Pearl E. Barton, 13.[17] James Maxfield, 61, was reported at the Watertown State Hospital, Hampton Township, Rock Island County, Illinois.[18] Mary (Maxfield) Roberts continued to live at Crawford, with her husband, Less, blacksmith, and children Effie, 26, school teacher, Kester, 24, laborer, and Rulo, 19, laborer.[19] Ida (Maxfield) Aird had moved into Crawford, where she lived with her husband, George, 65, and children Thersa, 25, Bud (Livy), 22, Elsie, 17, and Ralph, 14. Georger Aird operated a restaurant, with Thersa and Bud as part of the wait staff.[20] Nathaniel Maxfield continued to farm at Eureka with his wife and six children.

Widow Debbie Maxfield was still living with her son-in-law and daughter at the time of the 1920 Census, at Fourth Avenue, Dunning village, Blaine County. Deborah was 88 years old. The household included her grandson, Day F. Barton (George), 42, divorced, a house painter.[21]
