Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

SAMUEL HILL⁶ MAXFIELD (Joseph⁵, Nathaniel⁴, Eliphalet³, Nathaniel², John¹) was born at Loudon, Rockingham County (now Merrimack County), New Hampshire, on 15 September 1821, a child of Joseph Rowe Maxfield and his wife Sarah Jane Hill.^[1] He died at Springfield, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 22 November 1887.^[2] He married at Springfield on 27 February 1849 SARAH ANN HEATH.^[3] She was born at Springfield on 1819 and died at Enfield, Grafton County, New Hampshire, on 1 December 1888.^[4]

According to Wright, her maiden name was GEORGE, and her marriage to Samuel was her second marriage. However I have not found other information to support that.

Samuel grew up in Loudon, and at some point between the ages of nine and nineteen moved with his family to Springfield.

Samuel Hill Maxfield participated in numerous land transactions at Springfield:

• 22 March 1845. John F. Carter of Springfield quitclaimed to Samuel Maxfield of Springfield for $520, parcel in Springfield, whole of 100 acre lot #7 in Northern Division of Town plus half of 100 acre lot #8. On that same date Samuel Maxfield mortgaged for $520 to Nathaniel Hodge of Springfield this property. Mortgage discharged on 15 March 1847.^[5]
• 15 March 1847. Samuel Maxfield of Springfield sold to James W. Lull of Hopkinton, Merrimac County, for $630 the above mentioned property, 150 acres, the whole of the farm on which Samuel Maxfield now lives.^[6]
• 6 January 1849, Edward Tuck of Springfield sold to Samuel Maxfield of Springfield for $1000 a parcel in Springfield, north half of said town, northwest division, 150 acres, land deeded to Tuck by Josiah and Esther Jones on Feb 13, 1846 Two days later, 8 January 1849, Samuel received a mortgage from Samuel Quimby of Springfield for $300 on this property. On 24 February 1849 Samuel Maxfield of Springfield sold to John Blake for $620 this parcel of 150 acres, reserving use of large pasture for four years. On that same date John Blake mortgaged to Samuel Maxfield for $625 this same property, the so called "Jones Farm."^[7] This was just three days before Samuel married.

Samuel and Sarah were aged twenty-seven and thirty years respectively when they married in 1849. They were reported in the 1850 Census in Springfield as follows:^[8]

In the following decade Sarah gave birth to seven children, four of whom survived. The family was reported in the 1860 Census at Springfield as follows:^[9]

All four children had attended school in the past year.

Children Samuel and Martha both married in 1867. They married siblings. Samuel, 16, married Merinda Austin, 21 in April 1867. Martha, 15, married George Austin, 23, in May 1867. A decade later John Heath Maxfield would marry Melinda (Austin) Jacobs. Merinda, Melinda and George were all children of John and Hannah (Peaslee) Austin. The Samuel Maxfield household was reported as a three-generation family at Springfield, West Springfield Post Office, in the 1870 Census:^[10]

Marinda was the wife of the younger Samuel, James their son.

The 1880 Census reported the family at Springfield, with only one son at home, but two grandchildren:^[11]

Eddie and Josephine were the children of Martha Maxfield and her husband George Austin.

Samuel died in 1887 from pneumonia;^[12] Sarah died the following year.

Son John Heath Maxfield and his wife Melinda did not have any children. They were reported near his parents in the 1880 Census.^[13] He was a farmer at Springfield in that census, and also in 1900 and 1910.^[14] John Heath Maxfield died in 1910 from Bright's Disease of the kidneys.^[15] Melinda died three years later from acute gastritis.^[16]

Samuel and Sarah Ann Maxfield had the following children:

   2. Josephine Austin b. at New Hampshire about 1873-4.
3. JOHN HEATH⁷ MAXFIELD b. at Springfield on 8 August 1853,^[23] d. there on 6 August 1910;^[24] m. there on 10 December 1877 MELINDA (AUSTIN) JACOBS^[25] b. at Hill, Merrimack County, d. at Wilmot, Merrimack County, on 1 July 1913.^[26] Melinda had m (1). ________ JACOBS.^[27]
