Mary was born at Grafton, New Hampshire, on 25 August 1855 (F), a child of Stephen George and Lucille Hill. She had married a man surnamed FORD, who had died. As the first child of Joseph and Mary was called "fifth child" in his birth record, Mary probably had four children by her first husband.

Joseph R. Maxfield was called a farmer of Danbury, New Hampshire, in the birth records of his children, 1892 and 1894.

The record further indicated that Joseph and Mary had been married 9 years, and Mary had 8 children, of whom 5 were living.

The 1910 census (864:2:80A) reported the family of Joseph R. and Mary G. Maxfield at Upper Turnpike, Danbury. He was a farmer, assisted by his son, Clifton H., 17. Also at home was daughter Vera A., 14. Joseph R. Maxfield died at Danbury on 25 March 1923, aged 68 years, 2 months and fifteen days (F). His widow Mary died there on 17 October 1928 (F).
