ASA6 MAXFIELD (Nathan5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Loudon, Rockingham County (now Merrimack County) New Hampshire, on 16 May 1812, a child of Nathan Norton Maxfield and his wife Hannah Hill.[1] He died on 4 August 1881.[2] He married at Exeter, Penobscot County, Maine, on 2 February 1834 DELISHA ELDRIDGE[3] who was born at Dennis, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on 14 April 1817, and died at Exeter on 23 May 1899.[4]
The first of five children, Asa grew up for his first ten years at Loudon. He then moved with his family of origin to Exeter.
The 1840 Census reported the Asa Maxfield family in Exeter, however the record does not entirely agree with what we know of this family from other sources. According to that census record the family consisted of one male and one female in their 20s (Asa 28, Delisha 23), one male and one female between 5 and 10 (Samuel 5, Emily 3), and one male under 5 (Orlando 1).[5]
The Asa Maxfield family was reported in Exeter in the 1850 Census as follows:[6]
Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
Asa Maxfield | 38 | M | farmer | $1000 | NH
Delisha Maxfield | 33 | F | MA
Samuel A. Maxfield | 15 | M | ME | school
Emily J. Maxfield | 13 | F | ME | school
Mary Maxfield | 6 | F | ME | |||
George Maxfield | 4 | M | ME | school
Delisha E. Maxfield | 1 | F | ME

Son Orlando died the month before the census, age eleven, from "mercury fits."[7]
The 1860 census reported this family consisted of Asa, 48, farmer, Delitia, 43, Mary H., 17, George W., 14, Ellen D, 11, and Hattie A., 6. All of the children were in school.[8] Son Samuel was reported living at Exeter with his wife and child.[9] Emily had married in 1858.
This family was still in Exeter at the time of the 1870 Census but had shrunk considerably:[10]
Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth | Other |
Maxfield, Asa | 59 | M | W | farmer + butcher | $3000 | $2500 | NH

Maxfield, Hattie A. | 15 | F | W | ME | school |
Of the children: Mary had married in 1862, Ellen in 1868. Son George, 25, was reported living in a boarding house in Bangor, where he worked as a clerk in a store.[11]
Still in Exeter in 1880, the Census reported Asa, age 68, farmer, and Delisha, age 63.[12] George had married in 1881. Hattie, age 25, was working as an attendant at the Temporary Asylum for the Chronic Insane at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[13]
Concerning son George Maxfield: He was reported in the 1880 Census at 9 Maple Street, Bangor. Age 36. He worked as a butcher, his wife Annie was 31.[14] The 1910 Census reported them at 60 Woodbury Street, Bangor. George, 64, worked as a broker of timber land.[15] In 1820 George W. Maxfield, 74, widower, lived alone at 82 Pine Street, Bangor.[16]
