Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JOHN GILLINGHAM6 MAXFIELD (Jesse5, Richard4, Joseph3-2, John1) was born at Bradford, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 18 February 1838, a child of Jesse Abbott Maxfield and his wife Betsey Abbot. He died at Lebanon, Grafton County, New Hampshire, on 28 July 1869.[1] He married at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 28 February 1864 SUSAN REBECCA CARTER,[2] a child of John P. and Emeline E. Carter. She was born at Salisbury, Merrimack County, on 9 December 1843 and died on 10 November 1925.[3] Susan married second at Boscawen, Merrimack County, on 17 November 1870 JOHN POTTER,[4] who was born at New Hampshire on 22 June 1826 and died on 13 May 1902.[5] John had previously married ELIZABETH S.________, who was born on 12 January 1831 and died on 16 October 1870.[6]

John, the thiurd of five children, grew up in Merrimack County, where his father farmed.

John Maxfield and Susan Carter published their intentions to marry at Franklin, Merrimack County, on 14 October 1861.[7] However it would be two and a half years before they could actually marry. The War intervened. Less than a month after publishing their intentions, on 1 November 1861, John enlisted in Company E of the Seventh New Hampshire Infantry Regiment. He was discharged on 6 June 1863 at Saint Augustine, Florida, because of disability. After several months at home John went to Massachusetts and enlisted in the Second Regiment of Massachusetts Voluntary Cavalry, company C, on 24 February 1864. Four days later John and Susan married at Salem. John was mustered out of the service on 20 July 1865.[8]

A year after being mustered out, John's only son was born. When John enlisted the second time he was called a fireman, later records call him a mechanic. Five years after his marriage, John G. Maxfield was killed on the railroad; he was 36.[9] Susan was left with a child not quite three years old.

Susan Carter Maxfield was reported in the 1870 Census at two locations. She was reported at Salisbury (Concord Post Office) with her parents, John P. Carter, 49, shoe maker, and Emaline E. Carter, 45. Susan R. Maxfield, 26, was a dress maker; with her was her son George, 3. Susan owned real estate valued at $ 300 and a personal estate valued at $ 600.[10] She was also reported at Concord in the household of Charles and Mary Austin.[11]

A year after John Maxfield's death, widow Susan married widower John Potter. Susan was 26, John 44, and had been widowed one month. They each brought children into this marriage, and soon had more. The 1880 Census reported this blended family as follows:[12]
