Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

ALLEN DERICK6 MAXFIELD (Richard5, probably Benjamin4, Joseph3-2 John1) was born at Onondaga County, New York, on 9 November 1831, a child of Richard Maxfield and his wife Elizabeth Coon. He died on 11 October 1902.[1] He married about 1854-5 CATHERINE THOMPSON,[2] a child of Andrew Thompson and his wife Hulda Richards, who was born at New York on 10 August 1836 and died at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington, on 14 August 1925.[3]

The second of nine children, Allen migrated as a small child with his family to Ohio. Allen's father died when Allen was a teenager. The 1850 Census reported Derrick Maxfield, 17, laborer, at Tully, Marion County, Ohio, with his mother, older sister, and five younger siblings.[4]

Allen Derrick Maxfield married about 1854-5 and moved to Michigan, where he was reported at Montcalm, Montcalm County, Michigan, in the 1860 Census:[5]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace Other
Allen D. Maxfield 28 day laborer $500 NY
Catharine B. Maxfield 23 NY
Elvira Maxfield 4 MI
William Maxfield 1 MI

Allen served in the Union Army in the Civil War, from 5 February 1862 to 23 May 1865, although he was wounded on 15 July 1864. He served in Company F, 14th Michigan Infantry Regiment. Allen was discharged because of wounds, Harper Hospital, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.[6] This wound was probably received as his regiment participated in Sherman's march to the sea, north of Atlanta, near Kenesaw Mountain.

The 1870 Census reported this family at Spencer Township (Cold Springs Post Office), Kent County, Michigan. Alen D. Maxfield, 38 worked with "saddle and harness." Catherine was 33, William 12.[7] I have no further information on daughter Elvira.

Son William married about 1878-9. The 1880 census reported Allen and Catherine at Montcolm. Allen's parents were born in New York, Cathrine's in New York and Pennsylvania.[8] Son William was the next entry. The 1890 Veteran's Schedule reported Allen D. Maxfield at Pentwater village, Oceana County, Michigan, with the notation "arm shot to pieces."[9]

The 1900 census reported a household on Sixth Street, Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington, that could be this family. The name of the head of household is difficult to read; it looks like "Otto D." or "Abel D." Maxfield. He was a harness maker, born in November 1831, in New York, as were his parents. The wife's name appears to be Phebe A. Maxfield, born August 1836 in New York, as were her parents. This couple had been married 45 years, which appears likely for Allen and Catherine. "Phebe" had three children, of whom one was living. Living with them was a son, William R. Maxfield, a widower and a shingle sawyer, born at Michigan on July 1859.[10] In spite of the lack of clarity of the names, this appears to be a record for this family.

Allen died in 1902. The 1910 Census reported Catherine, widow, 73, living with her son William in Clallam County.[11] In 1920 at age 83, she still resided with her son at Port Angeles.[12]

Widow Catherine Maxfield fractured her left hip on 30 July 1925, and died from bronchial pneumonia on 14 August of that year.[13]

Allen Derick and Catherine Maxfield had the following children:

  1. ELVIRA7 MAXFIELD b. at Michigan about 1855-6.[14]
  2. WILLIAM R.7 MAXFIELD b. at Gowen, Montcalm County, on 28 July 1858
