John D. Maxfield was recorded in the 1860 Census in his parents' home in New Bedford, where he was identified as a seaman (Census 1860 Ma 4:738). He was called a mariner on his daughter's birth record in 1864, and a seaman in the 1870 Census.

John D. Maxfield and MERCY ADELAINE TABER were married at New Bedford, Massachusetts, on 22 December 1863 (NB Merc M 787). Mercy was born at New Bedford on 9 July 1844 to Stephen W. Taber, a housewright, and his wife Sarah W. (Chapman) Taber (VR NB 1:466).

The 1870 Census (605:1:117A) reported John D. and Mercy Maxfield at New Bedford, in the home of Mercy's mother, widow Sarah W. Taber.

Mercy (Taber) Maxfield died at New Bedford on 13 January 1871:
