Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

HAMPTON L.7 MAXFIELD (Harry6, William5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1 ) was born at Fairfax, Vermont, on 2 September 1836 (VT D), a child of Harry Maxfield and his first wife Abigail Bishop.

Hampton Maxfield served in the Civil War for its full duration, being wounded twice. His record is (Civ War Soldiers):

Name: Hampton L Maxfield
Residence: Fairfax, Vermont
Enlistment Date: 07 May 1861 as a Private; State: Vermont
Enlisted in Company H, 2nd Infantry Regiment Vermont on 20 Jun. 1861.
Wounded on 03 May 1863 at Marye's Heights, VA

Mustered out Company H, 2nd Infantry Regiment Vermont on 15 Jul. 1865 in Washington, DC
The 1890 Veteran's Census reported that Hampton Maxfield had lost his left ear and part of one thumb (1890 Vets).

Hampton Maxfield married ERMINA A. McCLELLAN at Cambridge, Lamoille County, Vermont, on 17 October 1866 (VR Vt). Ermina was born at Westford, Vermont, on 2 May 1846 (VT D), to Albert McClellan and Charlotte Ellsworth

The Hampton Maxfield family was reported in the 1870 census at Cambridge, Vermont, in 1880 at Fairfax, and in 1900 and 1910 at Fletcher, Franklin County, Vermont. Hampton was called a farmer on his marriage record (1866), on the birth record of their first child (1867) and on the 1870 census. In 1880 he was working at a woolen mill. He was a farmer again in 1900 and 1910. The 1880 census (1344:64C) reported the family as follows:

Name Related MS Sex Race Age B Occupation FB MB
Hampton Maxfield self M M W 43 VT works in woolen mill NH MA
Mina A. Maxfield wife M F W 34 VT keeping house NH MA
Lottie B. Maxfield daughter S F W 12 VT at school NH MA
Arthur A. Maxfield son S M W 10 at school NH MA
Cora F. Maxfield daughter S F W 7 VT at school NH MA

This contains an obvious error concerning the birthplaces of their parents. The 1900 and 1910 censuses indicate that Hampton, Ermina, and all their parents were born in Vermont.

Hamtpton and Ermina were both living in the 1910 census. Hampton L. Maxfield died at Fletcher on 11 December 1918 (VT D). Ermina Maxfield was reported in the 1920 census (1872:4B) at Fletcher, living with her daughter and son-in-law, Lottie B. and Ormel H. Gomo, ages 52 and 54 respectively, and her grandson, Karl Gomo, 24. They operated a dairy farm. Ermina Maxfield died at Fletcher on 20 November 1927 (VT D).

Hampton Maxfield and his wife Ermina McLellan had the following children:

  1. LOTTIE B.8 MAXFIELD
    • b. at Fairfax on 21 December 1867 (VR Vt)
