Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

LUTHER M.7 MAXFIELD (Albert6, Obadiah5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Lamont, Tallmadge Township, Ottawa County, Michigan about August 1854 (1900 census) a child of Albert and Eunice Maxfield. The History of Muskegon County, published in 1882, described his early life as follows (His Muskegon Co):
L. L. Maxfield was born in Lamont, Ottawa County, in 1855, and lived there until he was 21. He then went to Greenville, and was there three years, keeping books for Mr. S. W. Smith, merchant. From there he went to Portage Lake, stayed there two years bookkeeping, and then went to Fruitport and established a grocery trade, where he now resides. In 1879 he married Miss Estelle Osgood, of Port Washington, Wis., by whom he has one child.
Luther Maxfield married ESTELLE OSGOOD about 1879. The 1880 Census (597:126C) reported the couple, ages 27 and 18, at Fruitport, Muskegon County, Michigan.

Luther Maxfield married NETTIE J. OSGOOD at Box Butte County, Nebraska, in 1889 (Box Butte Co M) .

Luther Maxfield is next reported marrying LAVINA (VARNEY) MORRIS at Ansley, Custer County, Nebraska, on 6 September 1897 (IGI). The 1900 Census (921:7A) reported this family in the village of Callaway, Delight Township, Custer County, Nebraska:

34 Maxfield, Lavina wife W F Jun 1871 M NY NY NY
35 Morris, Earl step-son W M Jun 1888 S NE IN NY at school

This household was followed immediately by the following related household:

36 Osgood, Walter head W M Jun 1878 S WI NY Scotland salesman--grocery
37 Maxfield, Emma niece W F Oct 1880 S MI MI WI saleslady--dry goods

Under "number of years married" Luther reported 20, Lavina 13. These figures make sense if they are years since their first marriages. Lavina had one child, who was living. Walter Osgood must have been a younger bgrother of Estella Osgood, or Nettie Osgood, or both.

Luther Maxfield married JOSEPHINE (MEDDIE) SMITH at Jackson County, Missouri, on 9 November 1916 (MO M). They were both reported as being from Missouri, he 56, she 45.

The 1920 census (924:1A) reported the Luther and Josephine Maxfield family at 1042 West Prospect Road, Kansas City, Missouri:

Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, Luther M. head M W 56 M MI MI MI salesman, shoe store

The main problem in identifying the Luther of this family with the Luther son of Albert is the age. This census and the 1930 census indicate a birth ten years later than the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses. However the birth state is correct. We can only say that probably the Luther of this family is Luther son of Albert.

The 1930 census (1239:12B) reported this family at 4648 Page Avenue, Saint Louis, Missouri. Luther, age 68, first married at age 21, was a salesman of household furniture. Josephine was first married at age 24. His step-granddaughter Etha Swafford, age 16, was a bus girl at a restaurant.

Luther L. Maxfield died at Saint Louis on 30 September 1934 (MO D) from coronary occlusion, arteriosclerosis, and coronary sclerosis. He was described as a general merchant, born at Michigan age about 74, resident at Saint Louis for six years. Josephine, who was born at Missouri on 25 January 1872, died at San Bernardino County, California, on 26 February 1956 (CA D)

Luther Maxfield and his first wife Estella Osgood had the following child:

  1. EMMA8 MAXFIELD
    • b. at Fruitport, Michigan, on 1 November 1880 (MI B)
