ALBERT6 MAXFIELD (Obadiah5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New York on 1 October 1813, a child of Obadiah Maxfield and his wife Eunice. He died at Tallmadge, Ottawa County, Michigan, on 16 June 1885.[1] He married first before 1837 (birth of child) EUNICE CALKINS, who was born at New York about 1812-3 and died at Michigan on 23 December 1866.[2] Albert married second at Wright, Ottawa County, on 26 May 1869 CORDELIA (SAWDY) COOK,[3] who was born at New York on 3 March 1823 and died at Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan, on 9 October 1888.[4] Cordelia had previously married DELOS COOK who was born at New York on 1823 and died at Girard, Erie County, Pennsylvania, on 20 December 1859.[5]

The Albert Maxfield family was reported in the 1840 Census at Mooers, Clinton County, New York, consisting of a male and a female in their 20s (Albert and Eunice), a female between 10 and 15 (not identified), and a boy and a girl under 5 (Harriet and Obadiah). Two persons were engaged in agriculture.[6]

The Albert Maxfield family moved to Michigan sometime between 1846 (birth of a child in New York) and 1850 (census). Their first two children had died, but they had three new children to travel west with them. The 1850 census recorded the family at Tallmadge Township as follows:[7]

Albert Maxfield 36 M laborer $100 NY
Eunice Maxfield 36 F NY
Albert W. Maxfield 9 M NY school
Orrin G. Maxfield 7 M NY school

The 1857 Minnesota Territory Census reported this family at Dodge County, Township # 107, consisting of Albert, 44, minister, Eunice, 45, Albert, 16, farmer, Orin, 14, Lucy, 12, Jenet, 6, and Luther 1.[8]

The 1860 census reported the Albert Maxfield family back at Tallmadge, consisting of Albert Maxfield, a farmer, with wife Eunice and children Orin G., 15, Lucy A., 14, Jeanette, 8, and Luther R., 7.[9] Eldest son Warren, 16 (Albert W. in the 1850 census), was laboring on the Elnathan Phelps farm, just one household away on the census.[10]

Oren and Warren enlisted in the Civil War on 14 and 15 August, 1862, respectively, and both served in the 5th Cavalry Regiment of B Company. Warren died of wounds at Washington, D.C., on 6 November 1863. Oren was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on 20 June 1865.[11]

Eunice Maxfield died in 1866, age 53 years. Albert was left with surviving children ages 23, 20, 14 and 12. Two and a half years later widow Albert Maxfield married widower Cordelia Cook. He was 55, she 46.

Orren and Lucy both married in 1870, and Jennette married in 1871. Luther married in 1879.

The 1880 census reported the empty-nest family at Tallmadge Township as follows:[13]

I do not know when Albert was ordained, of what denomination, or with what congregation. Son O. Gregg Maxfield was reported in 1880 at Coopersville, Ottawa County, hotel keeper, with his wife and three children.[14] Daughter Lucy (Maxfield) James lived at Montcalm, Montcalm County, Michigan, with her husband, a child by his prior marriage, a nine-year-old son, and their eleven month old baby.[15] Daughter Jennett "Nettie" (Maxfield) Van Nett lived at Eastmanville, Ottawa County, with her husband, Geert, a native of the Netherlands, working in a saw mill, and their three children.[16] Luther and his new wife had moved to Fruitport, Muskegon County, Michigan.[17]
