Charles Otis Maxfield served in the Civil War as a soldier for over four years:

Maxfield was called a shoemaker on the birth records of children in 1857, 1859 and 1860, in the 1860 Census, his 1861 enlistment record, and his 1873 third marriage record, a cordwainer in his 1865 second marriage record, a nailer on a child's birth record in 1875, and reported as "works in shoe factory" on the 1870 and 1880 censuses.
Sarah Maxfield probably died while Charles was at war, after the birth of their last child (1860/1) and before his second marriage (1865).
ALICE A. COOMBS became the second wife of Charles O. Maxfield, at Lynn, Massachusetts on 27 November 1865 (VR Ma 180:219:146). The record noted the following:
Charles O. Maxfield of Lynn, 30, cordwainer, b. Salem to Josiah and Sarah Maxfield, 2d;Alice Coombs, the daughter of Samuel and Alice Coombs, was born at Lawrence or Ipswich, Massachusetts, according to marriage and death records, although her daughter's birth record said she was born in Maine, on 10 January 1847 (from age at death).

Perhaps the census taker accidently exchanged the birth states of Charles and Cynthia, and listed the step-mother's birth state as the mother's birth state for the children.
The 1900 Census (645:20A) reported Charles Maxfield, born at Massachusetts in September 1835, stationary engineer, his wife C. Emeline, born at Vermont in November 1833, and their child Henry L. Maxfield, born at Massachusetts in August 1875, working in a bathroom furniture store, living at 20 Arthur Street, Lynn.
Emeline Maxfield died before the 1910 Census (585:1:218A), which reported Charles O. Maxfield, 74, widower, stationary engineer, at 20 Arthur Street.
The 1920 Census (694:6B) reported Charles O. Maxfield at 20 Arthur Street, Lynn:
