Arthur Maxfield married MAY W. CARPENTER at Fairhaven, Massachusetts, on 21 February 1893 (MA VR 1841-1910:433:139:6). The record stated:

The 1900 Census (634:3A) reported Arthur T. Maxfield, born March 1870, his wife May W., born February 1875, and daughters Edna T., born September 1893, Gladys E., born November 1895, and Millicent A., born March 1897, living at 11 Lafayette Street, Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Arthur was a shoe maker, May was an oil painter.

Arthur and May Maxfield divorced before 1910, when they were reported separately in the census. Arthur (579:1:9A) was listed as 40, widower, shoe maker in a shoe factory, living at 32 Bethlehem Street, New Bedford. May (574:2:83B), divorced, age 37, artist, resided at 36 Lafayette Street, Fairhaven, with Edna T., 16, Gladys E., 14, and Millicent A., 12.

In the 1920 census May (682:13B) was reported at 36 Lafayette Street, Fairhaven :
