Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

ABRAHAM R.7 MAXFIELD (Jonathan6, Abraham5, Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Fairhaven, Massachusetts, according to the Rhode Island record of his marriage (Dartmouth on the Massachusetts record of the same marriage), on 16 January 1837, according to his age at death. Many records called him "Abram." Abraham was a child of Jonathan Maxfield and his wife Delida Snell.

Abraham married ANN CAROLINE TALLMAN at Tiverton, Rhose Island, on 2 March 1862 (VR RI 1862:452; also recorded at Dartmouth--VR Dart(H) Marriages 2:15:15). The Rhode Island record of their marriage follows:

Abraham R. Maxfield of Dartmouth, 24, white, farmer, b. Fairhaven to Jonathan and Delilah Maxfield, 1st;
Caroline Tallman of Dartmouth, 22, white, b. Westport to Betsey Tallman, 1st;
by James A. McKenzie, Baptist minister
Caroline Tallman was born at Westport, Massachusetts (marriage record) in January, 1840 (1900 Census; 1839/40 on marriage record, death record), a child of Betsey Tallman.

Abraham Maxfield was called a laborer in the 1860 Census, his 1862 Massachusetts marriage record, and the 1864, 1865, and 1870 birth records of his children. He was called a farmer on his Rhode Island marriage record. The 1870 Census placed him as a laborer in a mill; the 1880 Census called him a clerk in carpet rooms.

The 1870 Census (605:1:111A) located Abraham and Caroline Maxfield in New Bedford with five children, Isabella F., age 8, Charles T., age 6, William N., age 4, Cora E., age 1, and an unnamed male child, born in March, 1870.

The 1880 Census (525:236D) reported the family in New Bedford as follows:

This record further indicated that George and Isabel married cduring the census year.

The 1900 Census record (637:2:218) was difficult to read and confusing. It listed the Abram R. Maxfield family at 49 Mechanic Lane, New Bedford. Living with Abram (born January 1837) and Anne C. (born January 1840), were two sons and two grandchildren. Son Charles T. Maxfield, born January 1864, had been married five years; son William H. Maxfield, house painter, born December 1865, had been married six years. The next entry was for George W. Tinkham, however "Tinkham" was crossed out. George, a grandson born October 1880, was a stone mason. Jenny F. Maxfield, a granddaughter born March 1888, was at school. Perhaps the grandchildren were the children of daughter Isabelle, who married George Pinkham.

Abraham R. Maxfield died at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, on 26 November 1908, age 71 years, 10 months and 10 days (Rural Cem NB I-50). His body was buried at Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, on 29 November. The 1910 census (579:1:26A) reported Carrie A. Maxfield, 70, widow, living at 49 Mechanic Lane, New Bedford, with her sons Charles T., 45, employed at a print shop, and William H., 57, house painter. Both sons were single. Carrie had five children, all living.

Abraham's widow, called Ann C. Maxfield in the cemetery records, died at 49 Mechanic's Lane, New Bedford, on 5 June 1911, about 71 years old (Rural Cem NB I-50). She was buried at Rural Cemetery on 7 June.
