Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Eighth Generation

EUGENE T.8 MAXFIELD (William7, Gilbert6, William5, David4, probably Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Ohio on 24 Nevember 1858 (OH D 52474), a child of William Cullen Maxfield and his wife Seretha Jane Trusdell. His family had moved to Columbus, Ohio, by 1870 (census). In 1880 (census) he was living with his parents at Columbus and working as a printer.

Eugene Maxfield married SARAH YOUNG about 1885/6. Sarah was born at Canada about November 1866 (1900 census).

The 1900 Census (1243:5A) reported the family at 330 South B Street, Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio, as follows:

Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, Eugene head W M Nov 1860 M OH OH OH slate worker
Maxfield, Sarah wife W F Nov 1866 M Canada (English) Canada (English) Canada (English)
Maxfield, Nora daughter W F Sep 1899 S OH OH OH

This document further stated that Eugene and Sarah had been married fourteen years, Sarah had two children, one of whom was living, and she came to the United States in 1872.

On 29 April 1905, Eugene Maxfield, describes as an ex-fireman, was arrested on the complaint of his wife for non-support. He was given a warning and released (Hamilton Sun 1 May 1905, p. 3).

Eugene T. Maxfield died at Ross Township, Butler County, Ohio, on 29 October 1912 (OH D 52474). The death record gave the cause as "shock due to multiple burns to body as a result of explosion of gasoline stove." A newspaper report (Hamilton Jour 29 Oct 1912, p. 1) gave further details. It described Maxfield as "former runner of fire department, lately employed as timer by Philip Held." The injuries were from the explosion of a gasoline stove in the kitchen of the cottage of Dick Sullivan. He stayed over night at a friend's house, to recover from his injuries, but he did not.

I have not found any members of this family in the 1910 or 1920 census. The 1930 Census (1801:5A) reported widow Sarah and daughter Henrietta at Columbus, Ohio:

Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, Sarah E. head F W 62 Wd Canada-French Canada-French Canada-French cook, public school
Maxfield, Henrietta E. daughter F W 26 S OH OH Canada--French cigar maker, cigar factory

This document also gave Sarah's entrance into the United States as occuring in 1872.
