The 1850 Census (700:279B) reported William B. Maxfield, age 16, a student resident at Gambier College Township, Knox County, Ohio. Included on a long list of students, he was probably a student at Kenyon College or a related preparatory school.
William Cullen Maxfield married SARETHA JANE TRUSDELL at Morrow County, Ohio, on 6 October 1856 (OH M). Saretha was born at Newton, New Jersey, on 18 May 1840, a child of Steven Truesdell and his wife Rebecca Bassett (OH D 47974). The young Maxfield family was reported at Chesterville, Morrow County, Ohio, in the 1860 Census (1017:15). The family consisted of Cullen C. Maxfield, 27, physician, Jane Maxfield, 21, Emily H. Maxfield, 2, and Eugene S. Maxfield, 1.
William Maxfield served four months in the military in the Civil War (Civil War Soldiers). William C. Maxfield, of Ohio, enlisted on 23 April 1861 as a corporal at the age of 29. He joined Company G, 20th Infantry Regiment of Ohio, on 27 April. He was mustered out on 28 August 1861.
This William Maxfield lived at Columbus, Ohio, at least from the 1870 census until his death. That census (1201:1:112B) reported the family as follows:

The 1880 census (1017:496C) recorded William, age 50, tailor, and wife Jane, age 43, at Columbus. William was born in Ohio of parents born in Vermont; Jane was born in New Jersey of parents born in New Jersey. Five children were reported; first-born Emily no longer lived at home, but Gertty was added to the family. According to this census Eugene was male (not female as reported in 1870), born in New Jersey, age 21, and employed as a printer. Hattie, age 19, was at home, William, age 17, was also employed as a printer, Grace, age 8, and Gertty age 7, attended school.
The 1900 census reported William and Saretha living with daughter Grace and her family at 452 Sixth Avenue, Columbus (1270:1:54A):

The above record also indicated that William and Saretha had been married 43 years, and Saretha had six children, all living in 1900.
William Cullen Maxfield died at Columbus on 4 September 1912 (OH D 48529), and was buried two days later at Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus. Saretha died at Kenton, Hardin County, Ohio, on 9 August 1914 (OH D 47974).
