Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Eighth Generation

GEORGE F.8 MAXFIELD (Chauncey7, Harry6, William5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Wisconsin on November 1849 (1900 Census), a child of Chauncey L. Maxfield and his wife Rosetta Woodworth. George grew up with his parents on farms at Minnesota, where he was reported on the 1860 and 1870 censuses. I have not found him on the 1880 census, but the 1883 Washington state census reported G. Maxfield, 32, born Wisconsin, farmer, in a large household at Lewis County, Washington (WA Cen 1883).

George F. Maxfield married MARGARET A. ________ sometime before the 1885 Washington Census, which reported in their return from Tenino and Tumwaler, Thurston County, G. F. Maxfield, 33, farmer, born Wisconsin, and Margaret Maxfield, 16, wife, born Oregon (WA Cen 1885). In 1887 they were again reported at Thurston County (WA Cen 1887), he a farmer, 35, she wife, 18. In 1889 Geo. Maxfield, 40, laborer, single, was reported at Olympia Thurston County, Washington (WA Cen 1889). It would appear that Margaret either died or divorced.

On 7 November 1894 George F. Maxfield married SARAH ZICKRICK at Saint Charles, Winona County, Minnesota (MN M). Sarah was born at Lomira, Dodge County, Wisconsin, on 23 September 1859 (Covina Citizen, 14 Dec 1951, p. 2). The 1900 Census (777:6A) reported George and Sarah farming at Lansing Township, Mower County, Minnesota. According to this record George F. Maxfield, farmer, was born in November 1849 at Wisconsin, his parents born at Vermont. Sarah Maxfield, his wife, was born in September 1859 at Wisconsin, her parents born at Germany. They had been married five years and had no children.

The 1910 Census (86:9B) reported the couple at 110 Cottage Drive, Rowland Township, Los Angeles County, California. George F. Maxfield, 60, married twice, was living on his own income. Sarah Z. Maxfield, his wife, 50, married once, had given birth to no children. That same census on a supplemental page (86:18A) reported their adopted daughter, Myrtle Maxfield, at the same address, age 14, born at Minnesota.

George F. Maxfield probably died some time between 1910 and 1920, as the census of the latter year (103:10A) reported Sarah Maxfield, a widow, living at 254 West Dexter Street, Covina, Los Angeles County, California. Some relatives with the last name of Zick were living with her. The 1930 Census (124:5B) reported widow Sarah Maxfield at 216 West Orange Street, Covina.

Sarah (Zickrick) Maxfield died at Covina on 4 December 1951 (Covina Citizen, 14 Dec 1951, p. 2). For the full obituary see below.

Final Rites Held for Mrs. Maxfield on December 4
Sarah Maxfield was laid to rest in Oakdale Cemetery on December 7, following a simple lovely service conducted by Dr. Irvin Williams, minister of the First Presbyterian Church at Custer in Christensen's chapel. She passed away at her home, 216 Orange Street, on December 4, after an illness of several weeks. She has been a resident of Covina since 1910 and had celebrated her 92d birthday last September 23.
Sarah Zickrick was born at Lomira, Wisconsin, in 1859, and moved to Minneapolis at the age of seven. She completed her education and then taught school until marrying George F. Maxfield.
When their only daughter, Myrtle, was 13 years old, the family moved to Covina. Myrtle later became Mrs. William Colver, but both she and Mr. Maxfield have since passed away.
