Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Eighth Generation

THOMAS JEFFERSON8 MAXFIELD (John7, Nathaniel6, Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Saxon, Stark County, Illinois, on 19 April 1846 (NMGR 7:87), a child of John Arnold Maxfield and his wife Jane Winter.

Thomas Maxfield fought in the Civil War in 1864. His service was recorded with Henry County Illinois (rootsweb):

134th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Co. H: Troops of Henry Co., Ill:
Pvt. Thomas J. Maxfield of Saxon, enlisted May 18 1864, mustered May 31 1864, mustered out Oct 25, 1864.
Thomas J. Maxfield married NELA ROXANNE COE (NMGR 7:87) about 1869/70. Nela was born at New York on 12 March 1854 (Ca D 1940-97).

I have not found any record of this family in either the 1870 or 1880 census. Judging from the birthplaces of their children they were in Kansas in 1870 and 1880, and Saint Joseph, Missouri in 1882. They migrated to Oregon about 1889 (His Ore 4:368). The 1890 Veteran's Census found Thomas Maxfield at Elkton Precinct, Douglas County, Oregon (1890 Vet)

The 1900 Census (113:1:280) reported this family at Edgewood Township, Siskiyou County, California:

This record also indicated that Thomas and Nela had been married 30 years, and that Nela had nine children, seven of whom were living.

The 1910 census (108:1:41B) reported Thomas Maxfield, 63, and his wife Nola, 56, at Edgewood Township. They had been married forty years, Thomas was a farmer, Nola had nine children, seven living. With them were daughters Lena Dallas, 20, and Elsie Maxfield, 18. Lena had been married four years, and had five children, three living. These three grandchildren of Thomas and Nola, living in this household, all born in California, were Harold Dallas, 3 years, Nora Dallas, 2 years, and Carol Dallas, a grandson, 8 months.

The 1920 census (149:1A:13-19) reported the family at Edgewood Township, Siskiyou County, California, as follows:
