JOHN COWIN8 MAXFIELD (John7, Nathaniel6, Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Saxon, Stark County, Illinois, on 3 February 1854 (NMGR 7:93), a child of John Arnold Maxfield and his wife Jane Winter.

John Maxfield married SARAH BENNETT LESTER at Stark County on 22 September 1881 (IL M). Sarah was born at Illinois on March 1854 (1900 Census).

The 1895 Kansas census (Kan C 1895:86:3) found J. C. Maxfield, 41, at Moundridge, McPherson County, Kansas. He was described as from Illinois, a drayman, trained in youth for farming. Also in the household was Sara, 41, housewife, Adoplhus, 13, Gertrude, 11, and Adah, 9, all in school. J. C. and Sara had been born in Illinois, Adolphus in Missouri, Gertrude in Iowa, and Adah in Illinois.

The 1900 Census (488:1:155) reported this family at Park Street, Moundridge, McPherson County, Kansas:

This record further indicated that Sarah had four children, three of whom were living. Based on the birthplaces of the children this family was probably living in Missouri in 1882, Iowa in 1884, and Illinois in 1886.

The 1910 census (291:2:277A) reported John C. Maxfield, 56, his wife Sarah J., 56, daughter Gertrude, 25, and his father John A., 87, widowed, at 543 Edward Street, Wethersfield Township, Henry County, Illinois. John C. was laborer in a factory, Gertrude was paralytic, and John A. had his own income.

Sarah Maxfield died before 1920. According to the 1920 Census (371:15B) widower John C. Maxfield, age 65, was living at 600 East Church Street, Wethersfield village, Wethersfield Township, Henry County, Illinois, with his daughter, Ada M. Taylor, age 34, her husband, Alfred R. Taylor, a postal clerk age 41, and their two children, Russell M. Taylor, age 9, and Glenn J. Taylor, age 6.

In 1929 he was living at Kewanee, Illinois (NMGR 7:93).

John and Sarah Maxfield had the following children:
