Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Eighth Generation

JOHN COOK8 MAXFIELD (Charles7, Oren6, Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Fairmont, Fillmore County, Nebraska (F), on September 1877 (1900 Census), a child of Charles H. M. Maxfield and his wife Charlotte Cook. When John was four years old his father died; a few years later his mother remarried, and they moved to Brooklyn, New York, where John was living in 1900.

John Cook Maxfield evidently married BURDELLA ________, as they appear as husband and wife in the 1910 census (1285:2:244A). According to that record, Burdella was born at Indiana about 1883/4, and they were married about 1905/6. That record found this childless couple living at 722 Patton Road, Portland, Oregon. John, age 32, was an agent for a wholesale firm, Burdella, his wife, age 26, had no children; she was born in Indiana, her parents in Ohio. They had been married four years.

There is some confusion in the records. John Cook Maxfield married NORMA ULRICH, who was first married about 1908, and their son was born in 1909. Norma A. Ulrich was born at Utah in January 1890, a child of Edward J. and Adeline S. Ulrich (1900 Census: 1688:9A:43-45). The 1920 Census (136:9A) found this family at 3161 Jackson Street, San Francisco, California:

Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, John C. head M W 42 M NE MA NY manager
bed spring manufacturer
Maxfield, Norma wife F W 30 M UT KY IA none
Maxfield, William son M W 10 S UT NE UT none

The 1930 Census (104:10B) reported this family at 3916 Annerly Road, Oakland, California. John was a furniture broker, and son William was a clerk at a bank. John was 51, Norma 39. William 20. John was first married at 26, Norma at 17. John incorrectly identified his birthplace as Illinois, but correctly identified his father's birthplace as Illinois. Norma identified her father's birthplace as Ohio.

According to French (F) and Wright (NMGR), John Cook Maxfield lived at Chicago, but there is no other evidence to support this claim.

John Cook Maxfield shot himself at the San Francisco Furniture Exchange, and died, on March 1935 (reported in the newspaper March 19) (Oak Trib).

John Cook and Norma Maxfield had the following child:

  1. WILLIAM EDWARD9 MAXFIELD b. at Utah on 15 August 1909
