JOSIAH BROWN8 MAXFIELD (Oscar7, Josiah6, James5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Alton, Madison County, Illinois, on 21 April 1878 (NMGR 7:95), a child of Oscar Waldo Maxfield and his wife Amelia Albon.

Josiah Maxfield served in the military during the Spanish-American War, as reported by Wright (NMGR 7:95):

enlisted March 15, 1898 in the Illinois Naval Militia, and entered service in the Spanish-American War on May 31st, serving on the U.S.S. Harvard to September 9, 1898.
Was discharged from the U.S.S. Vermont, returning to State Service September 12, 1898.
Was appointed Ensign, Illinois Naval Militia, April 16, 1901;
resigned February 17, 1902
Josiah Maxfield married ALICE IDORA BENTON at Saint Louis, Missouri, on 8 June 1911 (NMGR 7:96). She was born at Missouri in 1890 (1920 Census) a child of Fred Weber Benton and Lucretia Fisher.

Josiah returned to military service to serve his country in World War I (NMGR 7:95):

appointed a Lieutenant, National Naval Volunteers, October 16, 1906;
called into active service April 6, 1917, World War I.
Served on the U.S.S. Massachusetts and Arkansas from May 25 to December 23 1917;
transferred to U.S. Naval Reserve Training Camp, Charleston Navy Yard, SC, December 24, 1917, and there until February 4, 1918.
Detailed Executive Officer, Material School, Hampton Roads, Va., February 6, 1918 to April 28, 1919.
Was released from active duty and detailed to inactive duty at home station May 3, 1919.
Resigned 1920.

According to Wright, Josiah Maxfield was manager of a real estate and insurance office for George H. Smiley & Company, at Alton (NMGR 7:95). He died there on 2 April 1929 (NMGR 7:95) and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Alton (NMGR 7:95).

The 1930 Census reported widow Alice Maxfield and her two daughters living at Mobile, Alabama.

Josiah and Alice Maxfield had the following children:

    • m. at Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, on 17 December 1934 HIRAM D. SMITH (Edw Int)
        Mr and Mrs Maxfield entertained with a family party Monday evening when the marriage of their neice, Miss Lucretia I. Maxfield and Hiram D. Smith of Alton was announced. The young couple were married Dec 17, 1934 at the Presbyterian parsonage in Jerseyville by the Rev. Farrell. Mrs. Smith is the daughter of Mrs. Alice Maxfield and the late J. B. Maxfield of Alton and a granddaughter of O. W. Maxfield. Mr. smith is engaged by the Tri-City Grocery Company and they will reside in Alton.
  2. DOROTHY ALICE9 MAXFIELD
    • b. at Alabama (1920, 1930 census records) on 20 April 1919 (NMGR 7:96)
