HARVEY ELMER9 MAXFIELD (Butler8, Samuel7, Nathan6, probably Eliphalet5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New York on 8 June 1898 (WWI Draft; Millbank Cem), a child of Butler G. Maxfield and his wife Anna Curtis. Sometime between the ages of four and twelve, Harvey moved with his family from Potsdam, New York, to Millbank, South Dakota. Harvey signed up for the draft at Grant County, South Dakota, on 12 September 1918 (WWI Draft), the year of his father's death. He provided the following information:

Harvey fought in World War I, as indicated on the 1930 census and on his gravestone, which reads:

Harvey E. Maxfield married MABEL V. HANSEN at Wagner, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, on 21 June 1927 (SD M). He was 29, she 27. She came from Charles Mix County. She was born at Iowa on 24 December 1899 (SSDI).

The 1930 Census (2223:6A) reported this family at 411 Sixth Street, Millbank, South Dakota. Harvey E. Maxfield, who rented his home for $35 a month, was 31 years old, a merchant operating a grocery store, and a veteran of the World War. His wife Mabel V. Maxfield, age 30, was born at Iowa of parents born at Denmark. They had one child, Joan B. Maxfield, age one year.

The 1940 Census (3856:2A) described a larger family at 509 South Sixth Street, Millbank:

Harvey owned his home, which cost $6000. Joann and Janice were attending school.

Harvey Elmer Maxfield died on 29 December 1962 (Millbank Cem). Mabel died on April 1993 (SSDI).

Harvey E. Maxfield and his wife Mabel Hansen had the following children (1940 census):
