Morris Maxfield died at Barre on 24 September, 1997 (Morris obit). His obituary summarized several main elements of his life:
Barre--Morris H. Maxfield, 86, of Brook Street died September 24, 1997 at his home. He was born in Barre, July 21, 1911, the son of Harland and Laura (Kidder) Maxfield. He was raised by his parents and grandparents, Heman and Lucena Maxfield. He attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1929 and attended the University of Illinois. He married Louise Dodge in 1941. In 1940 he was drafted into the U. S. army. He completed artillery training and was involved in the Louisiana Maneuvers. He was recalled to active duty in 1942 and served with the 70th Postal Unit, 12th Postal Regulation Section in the South Pacific, Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. He worked for B. W. Hooker Furniture Co. and briefly for the U.S. Department of Immigration and Naturalization in Newport in 1934. He began working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Barre in the late 1930s. He retired in 1967 after 32 years of service. He was employed by the Vermont Highway Department from 1967 to 1973 and also worked for the parts department of Houle Auto and as a delivery man for Modern Printing. He was a member of the Universalist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Barre; two sons, Whitney of Barre and Terry of Rutland and seven grandchildren.
