Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Eleventh Generation

CHARLES FRANKLIN10 MAXFIELD (Alton9, Leon8, Montravilla7, Nathan6, probably Eliphalet5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Massena, Saint Lawrence County, New York, on 12 May 1919 (SSDI; VR NY), a child of Alton A. Maxfield and his wife Thoda Taylor. Frank Charles Maxfield married MABEL MOSHER some time before he enlisted in 1944, probably before the birth of their first child about 1939/40. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mosher of Pierrepont, Saint Lawrence County. He enlisted in the Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on 23 June 1944, and he served until 16 November 1944 (WWII Enl; BIRLS). According to his enlistment record he was from Saint Lawrence County, New York, born 1919, had completed one year of High School, and was married.

Frank and Mabel Maxfield were living at 26 Depot Street, Potsdam, New York, on 12 February 1949, when their six year old son died in a traffic accident. It was reported in the Courier-Freeman on 16 February 1949 (Courier-Freeman):

Youth Fatally Injured When Struck by Car

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Charles Maxfield, 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maxfield, 26 Depot Street who was fatally injured Saturday when struck by a car in Market street. The services were held from the home at 1:30 and at 2 at First Methodist Church, Rev. Wendall Carter officiating. The body was placed in the vault at Bayside cemetery.
Charles was crossing Market Street with a group of boys in front of the Boys' Club as the car driven by Emile Perry of Norwood approached. Apparently catching sight of the oncoming car, he started back from the street and, according to his companions, was struck. Picked up by Red Crotty, coach of the VFW basketball team who was nearby, the youth was carried to the office of Dr. Marshall Stevenson across the street and Patrolman James Singer, cruising in the police ear, hurried him to the hospital.
He died from internal injuries shortly before midnight, blood transfusions administered in an effort to save his life proving futile.
Charles Maxfield, who was a familiar little figure each day at the corner of Market and Depot streets as he waited for the bus to go to school, was born here, the son of Frank and Mabel Mosher Maxfield. Mrs. Maxfield is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mosher of Pierrepont. Surviving, besides the parents, are three brothers and one sister, David, 9; Daniel, 8; Dwayne, 7, and Betty Marie, 2 months; also his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mosher of Pierpont, and his paternal grandparents, Mr, and Mrs, Alton Maxfield of Maynard Street, Potsdam.

Frank Charles Maxfield died at Syracuse, New York, on 13 December 1985 (SSDI; Syracuse Herald, 14 Dec 1985, p. 4). Mabel Maxfield died at Syracuse on 4 February 2008. (Syracuse Post, 6 Feb 2008, p. 18)
