Rev. LELAND CLYDE10 MAXFIELD (John9, Jeremiah8, John7, Nathaniel6, Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Prosser, Adams County, Nebraska, on 21 February 1914 a son of John Clyde Maxfield and his wife Clara Ruby Converse . He died at Rainier, Columbia County, Oregon, on 11 June 2003.[1] He married at Greeley, Weld County, Colorado, on 2 June 1940 MILDRED RUTH BETTGER.[2] She was born at Flat Top, Converse County, Wyoming, on 16 October 1919, a daughter of Henry and Freda Bettger,[3] and died at Rainier on 25 January 2015.[4]

Leland Clyde Maxfield grew up the second of seven children to reach adulthood, of a Nebraska farm family that moved often. Born in southeastern Nebraska, his family moved by the time he was four years old to Gordon, Sheridan County, Nebraska, in the northwest of the state. By the age of thirteen Leland had moved with his family to Denby, Shannon County, South Dakota. Denby is on the Oglala Lakota Indian Reservation, only 25 miles north of Gordon. By 1935, Leland, now twenty-one, had moved back to Gordon on his own.

Leland Clyde Maxfield was ordained as a minister of the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) at Nebraska Camp meeting in Gordon in 1937. Prior to ordination Leland graduated from Gordon Bible College in Gordon. He served all his adult life as a minister of the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana). His pastorates included the following:[5]

Leland Maxfield drove school bus, starting in Baker and continued through to Rainier, and attended for a year and a half the Pacific Bible College (now Warner Pacific College), in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.[6]

Leland Maxfield married Mildred Bettger within a year of his beginning his first pastorate at Greeley. They had three children: two girls one born at Greeley and one born at Albion, and after an interval of eight years, a son born at Baker, Oregon. Leland and Mildred remained at Rainier following his retirement.

Leland Clyde Maxfield and his wife Mildred Ruth Converse had the following children:[7]

  2. BERNADINE MILDRED11 MAXFIELD b. at Albion, Boone Co., NE, on 16 June 1946; m. at Rainier on 26 October 1968 HOWARD EUGENE BUTZ, b. at Ripon, San Joaquin Co., CA, on 25 October 1947.
  3. PAUL LELAND11 MAXFIELD b. at Baker City, Baker Co., OR, on 17 September 1954.
