John Clyde Maxfield grew up the fourth of six children of a Nebraska farm family. His parents and older siblings had moved from Stark County, Illinois, to Adams County, Nebraska, just before his birth, as they were reported at the former location on the census of 1 June 1880, and John Clyde was born at Nebraska on 18 January 1881. His family of origin farmed at Highland Township, Adams County, for the rest of their lives.
John and Ruby and family moved often. Based on their location in census records, the birth places of their children, and his draft registration, they were at Fruitmere, Fremont County, Colorado, in 1910, at Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, in 1912, had children born at Prosser, Adams County, Nebraska, in 1914 and 1915, were at Gordon, Sheridan County, Nebraska, from 1918 through 1925, at Denby, Shannon County, South Dakota, from 1927 through 1935, and at Russell, King County, Washington, in 1940. They remained at King County, where they died in 1961, and where most of their children settled.
John Clyde Maxfield was a farmer. The 1910 census called him a fruit farmer; in 1918 and 1920 he was a farmer with a general farm; the 1930 census called him a laborer; in 1940 he was described as a farmer out of work for 96 weeks. When John Clyde Maxfield registered for the draft in 1918 he was described as short, medium build, gray eyes, light brown hair.[5]
When John registered for the draft in 1918 he gave his full name as John Clyde Maxfield, and his wife's as Clara Ruby Maxfield. When they were married in 1910 by Rev. G. W. Hatcher they were Clyde and Ruby. In census records, he was John in 1910, 1920 and 1940, Clyde in 1930; she was Ruby in 1910 and 1940, Clara in 1920, and Sarah in 1930. Perhaps the census taker had poor hearing and heard Clara as Sarah? In addition to the seven children reported in censuses, Clyde and Ruby had an earlier child, who lived only two months in 1910.
