CHARLES W.3 MAXFIELD (John2, William1) was born in New York on January 1839 (1900 census), a child of John G. Maxfield and his wife Mary Guion. In 1860 he was still living at home, and was employed as an accountant.

Charles W. Maxfield married ELLEN S. EVANS about 1861/2. Ellen was born in Massachusetts in August 1843 (1900 census)

The 1870 census (860:1:54A) reported Charles and Ellen living at Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey, with their first three children, Charles, age 7, John, 5, and Edwin, 2. Charles G. Maxfield followed the family tradition, working as a fruit dealer.

The 1880 census (780:391B) reported the growing family at Bloomfield:
