SANFORD C.8 MAXFIELD (Abel7, David6, probably Daniel5-4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, Clement1) was born at Bristol, Rhode Island, according to the birth records of his children and his second marriage record, in 1828, according to the cemetery record, about 1829/30 according to the 1850 Census. He was a child of Abel Maxfield and his wife Betsey Chaffee.

SOPHIA W. HANDY married Sanford Maxfield probably some time before the birth of their first child in 1850. Sophia Handy was born at Bristol on 20 September 1833, a child of William and Phebe Handy, according to her death record.

Sanford Maxfield was called a laborer on the 1850 census, when he was living at home with his parents. He was a farmer at Bristol when his third child was born in 1858, a retired grocer at Warren in the 1870 census, a farmer at Warren, Rhode Island, at his second marriage in 1880, and a peddler at Warren at the birth of his fourth child in 1883.

Sanford and Sophia Maxfield were reported living at Warren in the 1870 census (1471:1:102A):

Sanford and Sophia Maxfield, of Warren, were divorced at Bristol County on 9 September 1879 (NewEnglandAncestors).

Sanford Maxfield married, as his second wife, at Barrington, Rhode Island, on 1 February 1880 LYDIA P. COWEN (VR RI M 1880:464). The event was recorded as follows:

Lydia Cowen, or Cowing, was born in Rochester, Massachusetts, 28 October, 1841 (VR Roch 1:92), a child of Seth Cowing, 2nd, and Christania. She was probably born in the section of Rochester which was later incorporated as Mattapoisett, as she gave that as her birthplace.

Sanford Maxfield's first wife, Sophia, died at Warren on 13 September 1886 (VR RI D 1886:562). The details were as follows:

Sanford Maxfield died in 1916 (RI Cem) and was buried at North Burial Ground, Bristol.
