Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

LEVI5 MAXFIELD (David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Vermont about 1784 a son of David Maxfield and his wife Judith Clough. He died at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont, on December 1816.[1] He married LAURA RICHMOND. She was born at Connecticut about 1789-90 and died at Hartland, Livingston County, Michigan, on 25 August 1870. Laura married as her second husband DANIEL MENTER, who was born at Vermont about 1776-7.[2]

Levi Maxfield was listed as a child of David and Judith in Frederick Gilmore Maxfield's Family Tree,[3] but was omitted from the list in Julia (Maxfield) Lamb's letter.[4] Levi's place of residence, and property transactions with other members of the family, support the claim that he belonged in this family.

The 1810 census placed Levi's age between 16 and 25, which would give him a birth year of 1784-1794. In the 1800 census in his father's household, he also appeared to be in the 16-25 age group. I therefore place him at the upper end of that age group in 1810, or born about 1784. As their first known child was born about 1807-8, we can estimate their marriage to have been about 1806. Laura's place of birth, and approximate year, are derived from the 1870 census.

The basic outline of this family comes from a biographical article on son-in-law John Glines found in Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Mich[5]

[John W. Glines] was married in New York to Judah Maxfield, a daughter of Levi Maxfield. Her father was in the War of 1812, in which he served as a Corporal. Her mother, Laura (Richmond) Maxfield, was a native of Canada. The children of this family were Levi, Thomas, Leonard, Judah and Fannie. Mr Maxwell was a farmer, and both he and his wife died in New York.

Levi Maxfield participated in the following property transfers at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont:

The 1810 census reported Levi Maxfield at Georgia, head of a household consisting of a man and a woman between 16 and 25, and two boys under ten.[11] This can be easily explained as Levi and Laura Maxfield and their first two sons, Leonard and Levi.

Levi Maxfield fought in the War of 1812. A Private, he enlisted on 26 March 1813, and was in Captain Phineas Williams' Company for a payroll dated 31 May 1813.[12]

Levi Maxfield was "warned out" of Milton on 3 April 1815.[13] That is, he was told to leave because he did not have any visible means of support. Levi died the following year.

I do not know when widow Laura (Richmond) Maxfield married Daniel Menter. The 1820 Census reported the Daniel Menter family at Fort Covington, Franklin County, New York, consisting of a male over 45, a female 26-44, a female 16-25, a male and a female 10-15, and a male and a female under 10.[14] These categorties would fit for Daniel Menter, Laura, either Levi or Leonard, and Judith and Thomas. However that cannot be proven. As Daniel had a daughter by his first wife, born about 1819-20, it is doubtful (but possible) that he had remarried by 7 August 1820 - the date of the census.

I have not found Daniel Menter in the 1830 Census. In 1840 he was reported at Newbury, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The family compositioin, with some possible identifications, included: male 60-69 (Daniel 63), female 40-49 (Laura 49), male 20-29 (Thomas Maxfield 25), female 15-19 (unidentified), and female under 5 (Mary Menter 3).[15] It is possible that Mary Menter was a daughter of Daniel and Laura, however Laura would have been about 46 years old at that time.

The 1850 Census reported Daniel and Laura Minter at Hartland, immediately after the Thomas Maxfield family. The Minter household consisted of Daniel Minter, 73, farmer, Laura Minter, 60, and Mary Minter, 13.[16]

The 1860 Census reported this family at Rose, Oakland County, Michigan, consisting of Daniel Mentor, 83, Laura Mentor, 70, Mary Mentor, 23, Evelin Fuller, 5, and Robert Fuller, 2.[17]

The 1870 Census reported widow Laura Maxfield, 80, living with son widower Leonard Maxfield, 60, at Hartland.[18] She died a couple of months after that census.

The children of this family were moving on. Judith married about 1826 and moved with her husband to Hartland Township, where she died in 1844. Leonard and Levi married early in the 1830s, Thomas married in 1840 in Ohio. Levi had moved to Hartland Township by 1840, Thomas had joined him there by 1850. Leonard was reported at Saint Lawrence County, New York in the 1840 Census, at Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan in 1850. Leonard was also at Hartland by 1870.

Question: Were Levi and Leonard twins; if not who was older? Levi's grave marker lists his birth as in 1808. In the 1850 Census Levi is 43 years old and Leonard 42. In the 1860 Census Levi is 53 and Leonard 52. In the 1870 Census they are both 60. So I have listed Leonard's birth as about 1807-8. But Levi may be older.

Levi Maxfield and his wife Laura Richmond had the following children:

  1. LEVI6 MAXFIELD b. at Vermont on 1808.
  2. LEONARD6 MAXFIELD b. at Vermont about 1807-8.
  3. JUDITH6 MAXFIELD b. at Vermont on 1811; d. at Hartland on 7 September 1844;[19] m. about 1826 JOHN GLINES, b. at Meredith, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 7 May 1801, d. at Hartland on 24 September 1868.[20] He m. (2) on 5 February 1846 CYNTHIA ORMSBY.[21]. Children of Judith and John:
    1. George William Glines b. at Godmanchester, Franklin County, Quebec, on 3 November 1829 d. at Highland, Oakland County, on 30 October 1912;[22] m. on 18 November 1852 Laura Jane Maxfield b. at Newburg, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, on 23 February 1833, d. at Hartland on 13 November 1894,[23] daughter of Levi and Caroline (Campbell Maxfield.
    2. Pauline Glines b. at Canada about 1831-2.
    3. Laura Glines b. at Canada about 1833-4.
