Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

LEVI6 MAXFIELD (Levi5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Vermont in 1808 a child of Levi Maxfield and his wife Laura Richmond. He died at Hartland, Livingston County, Michigan, on 19 July 1888.[1] He married first before 1833 (birth of child) CAROLINE CAMPBELL, who was born at Vermont on 1810 and died on 1864.[2] Levi married second before 1870 (census) PRISCILLA BENEDICT, daughter of Joshua and Mary Benedict. She was born on 17 January 1823 and died at Romulus, Wayne County, Michigan, on 31 March 1874.[3]

Based on the birth information for the children, this family lived at Ohio, at least from 1833 to 1838. Levi Maxfield was one of the first settlers of Hartland Township, where he was reported in the 1840 census. The family consisted of a male in his 30s (Levi 32), a female in her 20s (Caroline 30), a female 5-9 (Laura Jane 7) and a female 0-4 (unidentified; there should be a male, George, 2).[4]

The 1850 Census reported this family at Hartland as follows:[5]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
8. Levi Maxwell 43 M farmer $ 300 VT
9. Caroline Maxwell 44 F NY
10. Jane Maxwell 17 F Canada school
11. Geo. Maxwell 11 M OH school
12. Chas. Maxwell 8 M MI
13. Juda Maxwell 6 F MI
14. Alfred Maxwell 4 M MI
15. Edgar Maxwell 6/12 M MI

Anyone with the surname of Maxfield is not surprized to see their name mistaken for Maxwell.

The 1860 Census reported thia family, with the surname "Mansfield" at Hartland. Caroline is not mentioned and the two oldest children are not at home. The family consisted of Levi, 53, farmer, Charles, 18, Judy Ann 16, Alfred 14 and Edgar 11.[6] Laura Jane had married her first cousin George Glines in 1852. The 1860 Census reported them at Hartland: George Glines, 30, farmer, Jane Glines, 28, and Charles Glines, 3.[7] George Maxfield, 18, farm laborer, was reported at Hartland in the household of John and Cynthia Glines.[81] John Glines was the husband of George's late Aunt Judith.

Caroline (Campbell) Maxfield died in 1864, leaving children at home ages 21, 20, 18, and 14. Sometime before 1870 Levi married Priscilla Benedict, who was fifteen years younger than him. They were reported in the 1870 Census at Hartland (Howells Post Office). Priscilla Maxfield, keeping house, was listed as the head of the household, followed by her father, Joshua Benedict, 77, farmer, and her husband, Levi Maxfield, 60, farmer, and two other persons.[9] Jane (Maxfield) Glines was also reported at Hartland (Howells Post Office) with two children.[10] Son George, who had fought in the Civil War, was reported in 1870 ar Rose, Oakland County, Michigan, with his wife and daughter.[11] Son Charles, 25, farm laborer, was at Highland Township, Oakland County, in the household of Norman and Anna Woodworth.[12] Judith had married in 1866. I have not found Judith, Alfred and Edgar in the 1870 Census.

Priscilla (Benedict) Maxfield died in 1874 at the age of 51, from abdomenal cancer.[13]

The 1880 Census reported "Levy" Maxfield, 72, retired farmer, living with his son, Alfred Maxfield, 36, farmer, at Hartland. Also in the family were Alfred's wife, Sarah, 27, son, Frank, 4, and brother, Edgar, farm laborer, 24.[14] George lived at Rose with his wife and two children.[15] Judy (Maxfield) Cole lived at Highland with her husband, three children, and brother Charles, 32, laborer.[16] Levi died in 1888.

Judith (Maxfield) Cole died in 1915 from pulmonary tuberculosis.[17] Her death was reported in the Milford Times:[18]

Judy Ann Maxfield, daughter of Levi and Caroline Maxfield, was born in the township of Hartland, county of Livingston, on November 15, 1845. She was united in marriage to Hiram Cole on January 7, 1866 and they immediately went to their home in Highland where she lived until two months before her death which occurred at the home of her son, Myron Cole in Highland. She leaves to mourn her loss two sons and one daughter, Myron E. and Peter Cole and Mrs. Ida Barrett of Highland, two brothers, Alfred and George Maxfield of Fenton, also five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She died May 19, 1915 after an illness of one year.

Charles Maxfield did not marry. He was reported in the 1900 Census at Highland, immediately after his brother Alfred. Charles was a farm laborer, born July 1843.[19] He was also reported there in 1910, immediately after Edgar Maxfield, and with one intervening household before Alfred Maxfield. Charles was 68, single, laborer.[20]
