Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

THOMAS6 MAXFIELD (Levi5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Vermont about 1815, a child of Levi Maxfield and his wife Laura Richmond. He died at Hartland, Livingston County, Michigan, on 15 September 1886.[1] He married at Cuyahoga County, Ohio, on 22 September 1840 BELINDA JACKSON[2] born at Ohio on 16 September 1822, died at Burnside, Lapeer County, Michigan, on 6 September 1904.[3] Many records call her Melinda.

Thomas was born about a year before his father died. I do not know who helped his mother to raise him, or when he moved to Ohio. He married there in 1840. Based on the birthplaces of his children, he had moved to Michigan by 1843, and lived in Livingston County. All records that indicate an occupation call him a farmer.

The 1850 census for Hartland listed Thomas Maxfield, 33, farmer, Malinda, 28, Levi, 8, Laura, 7, David, 4, and Philo, 3. Thomas was born at Vermont, Malinda and Levi at Ohio, the last three at Michigan.[4]

The 1860 census reported the family as follows:[5]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace Other
Thos. Maxfield 45 M VT
Melinda Maxfield 39 F OH
Levi H. Maxfield 18 M OH school
Laura Maxfield 16 F MI school
Orwell Maxfield 15 M MI school
Philo Maxfield 13 M MI school
Clarissa Maxfield 8 F MI school

By the 1870 census all of the earlier children had left home, but a new child had arrived. The record listed Thomas Maxfield, 54, farmer, Melinda, 50, keeping house, and William, 8, in school. According to this record, Thomas and Melinda could not write.[6] Of the other children:

In 1878 their youngest child, William died at age 16 from inflamation of the brain.[10]

The 1880 census reported the couple with no children at home. According to this census, Thomas, 65, farmer, was born in Canada, his parents in New York, his wife, Malinda, keeping house, was born in Ohio, as were her parents.[11] Levi lived in Highland, Oakland County, Michigan, with his wife, daughter, and mother-in-law.[12] David Orso lived at Hartland with his wife and four children.[13] Philo lived at Rose, Oakland County, with his wife and his wife's young sister.[14]

Thomas Maxfield died in 1886 from disentery.[15]

In 1900 Melinda was living at Thetford, Genesee County, Michigan, in the home of her son Philo, with his wife, their daughter, and their niece.[16] Belinda/Malinda died in 1904 from organic heart disease.[17]

Thomas Maxfield and his wife Belinda Jackson had the following children:

  1. LEVI H.7 MAXFIELD b. at Ohio on 6 October 1840.
  2. LAURA JANE7 MAXFIELD b. at Michigan about 1843, d. at Fenton, Genesee County, on 6 February 1899;[18] m(1). at Genesee County on 29 August 1869 JOSIAH PRATT b. at Vermont about 1823-4;[19] Laura m(2). at Fenton on 10 January 1895 GEORGE W. MYERS b. at New York about 1853-4.[20]
