Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

DUDLEY6 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet5-4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Mount Vernon, Kennebec County, Maine, on 3 August 1812, a child of Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Judith Alley.[1] He probably died before the 1850 Census. He married probably at Argyle, Penobscot County, Maine, before 1833 (birth of a child) SALLY AYERS of Argyle.[2] Sally was born at Mount Vernon, Maine, about 1812-3.[3]

Elizabeth Wright states that Dudley was a son of Samuel5 Maxfield (Dudley4, Samuel3, John2-1). She sites Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine as her source. However that source does not make that connection. The Dudley son of Samuel5 died before two of this Dudley's children were born. Also, the birth record for this Dudley Maxfield, in possesion of the Genealogical Society of Utah, states that he was the son of Eliphalet.

According to Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine, "Dudley Maxfield came to Argyle, Maine, when a young man, and lived and died there."[4] Dudley Maxfield was reported in the 1840 Census both at Argyle Plantation and the town of Argyle. The plantation record reported a male and female in their twenties (Dudley 27, Sally 27) and a male and female under 5 (Judith 5, Wentworth 2). The town record did not list family members, but stated that he worked in agriculture and "works in forest in the winter."[5] I do not have any record of Dudley Maxfield beyond the birth of a child in 1842.

Sally Maxfield was reported in the 1850 Census in a large household at Argyle headed by W. Ayers Lamb, and consisting of six persons surnamed Lamb, four surnamed Maxfield, and three surnamed Ayers. The Maxfields were as follows:[6]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Sally Maxfield 37 F ME
Judy Maxfield 14 F ME
Wentworth Maxfield 12 M ME
Alfreda Maxfield 9 F ME

I do not have any further record of Sally.

Dudley and Sally Maxfield had the following children:

  1. SAMUEL7 MAXFIELD b. at Argyle about 1833, d. about 1833 (age 6 months).[7]
  2. JUDITH7 MAXFIELD b. at Argyle on 19 March 1835, d. at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 10 April 1908;[8] m (1). C. C. SPENCER; m (2). ELMER E. BRODIE.[9]
  3. WENTWORTH7 MAXFIELD b. at Argyle on 5 June 1838
  4. ALFREDA7 MAXFIELD b. at Argyle on 8 April 1842, d. at Penobscot County on 3 April 1913;[10] m. about 1858 DUDLEY SPENCER[11] b. at Argyle on 7 February 1835, d. there on 24 November 1910.[12]
