James married first at Mount Vernon, Kennebec County, on 18 June 1848 BETSY WINSLOW BUTLER,[3] a child of John and Deborah (Carr) Butler, who was born at Mount Vernon on 10 June 1806 and died there on 7 February 1833.[4] James married second at Mount Vernon on 1 January 1834 MARY HOWLAND BUTLER,[5] also a child of John and Deborah (Carr) Butler, who was born about 1808-9 and died on 8 March 1836.[6] James married third ELVIRA FOSTER,[7] a child of Richard and Clarissa Harlow (Barton) Foster. James Quimby Maxfield grew up at Sandwich, Strafford County, New Hampshire, the fourth of ten children. Some time in his teen-age years has family moved to Mount Vernon. He was described in census records as a miller (1850, 1870) and farmer (1860). His residence, based on census records and birth records of his children, was at Mount Vernon 1826-38, Skowhegan, Somerset County, Maine, in 1840, back in Mount Vernon 1849-50, Corinna, Penobscot County, in 1860, and Saint Albans 1870-72.

Eleven months later James married his first wife's sister, Mary. She was twenty-six years old when they married, and died two years later at the age of twenty-eight. They had one child.
