Descendants of John Maxfield

Sixth Generation

JOHN6 MAXFIELD (Ezra5, John4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at Starksboro, Addison County, Vermont, on 7 August 1824[1] a son of Ezra French Maxfield and his wife Abigail Philbrick. He died at Barnstead, Belknap County, New Hampshire, on 26 April 1901.[2] He first married at Vershire, Orange County, Vermont, on 15 February 1842 ABIGAIL ROGERS.[3] She was born at New Hampshire about December 1808 , a daughter of Macajah and Loruhama Rogers. She died at West Fairlee, Orange County, on 2 May 1898.[4] He second married at Loudon, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 23 January 1856 JULIA ANN (GREEN) TRUE.[5] She was born at Loudon on 10 April 1827, a daughter of David Green and Ruthena Sherburne. She died probably at Pittsfield, Merrimack County, on 29 April 1911.[6] She had previously married at Pittsfield on 29 April 1849 CYRUS D. TRUE.[7] He was born at New Hampshire about 1824-5,[8] and died probably at Pittsfield before the Merrimack County probat court session of Jamuary 1854.[9]

John spent his early years on the family farm in Starksboro, Vermont, the sixth of eight children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. When John was about seven years old the family moved to Chichester, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, his father's place of origin. When John was nine, his father died. John's oldest brother, Daniel, took over the farm and John and his siblings continued to live there. The 1840 census suggests that he was still on the farm at Chichester at tht time.[10]

Soon after 1840, John Maxfield moved to Vershire, Vermont, where his brother Ezra had settled. The 1858 map of Vershire places E. Maxfield in the southeast corner of the town of Vershire, on the main road between Vershire Center and West Fairlee Village, closer to West Fairlee. The farm immediately north of E. Maxfield belonged to D. Johnson, and the one north of that belonged to M. Rogers[11] - three families that would become related.

John Maxfield married Abigail Rogers in 1842. He was 17, she was 33. Seven months later Abigail gave birth to a daughter. The marriage did not last long, and probably ended in divorce, as the 1850 census reported Abigail Rogers under her maiden name, living in Vermont with her parents and her daughter, and John Maxfield living with his mother in New Hampshire. The daughter, Lorenzah Maxfield, grew up with her mother and maternal grandparents in Vermont, where her uncle Ezra Maxfield was nearby. John Maxfield lived the rest of his life in New Hampshire, where he established a new family.

Lorenzah Maxfield, under various spellings, can be traced through the census records as follows:

1850 Census Vershire, Vermont[12]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
5. Micajah Rogers 77 M farmer $2000 MA
6. Loruhama Rogers 75 F NH
7. Abigail Rogers 40 F NH
8. Wm. Washngton 16 M farmer VT school
9. Lorenzo Maxfield 7 M VT school

Comparison with other records indicatees that the census taker made a mistake on the gender of "Lorenzo." The Rogers household was followed immediately by the household of Ezra Maxfield.

1860 Census, Vershire, Vermont[13]

38. Wm. Gilman 37 M farmer VT

40. Laurenzah Maxfield 17 F VT
1. Alferett C. Richardson 9 F VT
2. Lorohanna Rogers 85 F $800 $800 NH

This record followed immediately the household of Ezra Maxfield. Micajah Rogers had died at Vershire on 29 December 1857.[14] Lorenza Maxfield married Daniel Johnson in 1861. Loruhama Rogers died at Vershire on 23 June, 1867.[15] By 1870 Daniel Johnson, with his wife, children, and mother-in-law, had moved to Tunbridge, the town to the southwest of Vershire.

9. Johnson, Gladys 5 F W VT
10. Johnson, Major E. 1 M W VT
11. Rogers, Abigail 61 F W NH

Ruby and Gladys were both in school. "Eliza" is Lorenzah, based on comparison with other censuses. By 1880 this family had moved to Ely, a village in the town of Fairlee, which was on the Connecticut River, separated from Vershire only by the town of West Fairlee.

The record also indicated that Rubie, Gladys, Lafe, Carpenter and Frank were all attending school, Rubie was deaf, and Grace was born in September. The census taker crossed out two names, and wrote the corrected name after. Perhaps he had difficulty understanding them. The son called Major in 1870 and Lafe in 1880 was named Major Fredericks on his birth record; the son called Carpenter was Henry Carpenter on his marriage record; the daughter here called Grace was later called Abigail Grace on her grave marker.

Abigail Rogers died at West Fairlee on 2 May 1898, from the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.[18] Daniel and Lorenzah and their youngest daughter, Abigail, were reported in West Fairlee in the 1900 census.[19] West Fairlee is the town west of Fairlee and east of Vershire.

John H. Maxfield had returned to New Hampshire by 1850, when he appeared in the census with his mother and siblings. That census reported in Meredith, Belknap County, a household consisting of Abigail Maxfield, 65, Adelia, 32, John, 25, Abby, 24, and Henry, 20. At the same address the census recorded the household of Abigail's daughter and John's sister, Rhoda Davis, 30, her husband, John Davis, 41, manufacturer, and John Davis' children by a previous marriage, Sarah, 13, and Nathaniel, 7.[20]

John Maxfield. 31, married Julia Ann (Green) True, 28, at Loudon, on 23 January 1856. Julia had married Cyrus True at Pittsfield on 29 April, 1949. Within four months their child, David, arrived. Cyrus' death was reported to probate court at the January 1854 session. Cyrus would have been about 30 years old. Julia was a 26 year old widow with a four year old son. Two years later she married John Maxfield.

John and Julia Maxfield lived in Pittsfield, where they had five children in the next ten year. All reached adulthood and married. The 1860 census reported a family consisting of John Maxfield, 34, Julia, 33, David True, 10, and Abby and Frances Maxfield, ages three and one. John had a personal estate of $500, while Julia had real estate worth $800 and a personal estate of $150.[21] So she owned the farm.

The 1870 census reported the full family at Pittsfield as follows:[22]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
17. Maxfield, John H. 53 M W farmer $2800 $100 NH
18. Maxfield, Julia A. 43 F W keeping house $900 NH
19. Maxfield, Abbie E. 13 F W attending school NH
20. Maxfield, Francis H. 11 F W attending school NH
21. Maxfield, Truman G. 8 M W NH
22. Maxfield, Austin C. 5 M W NH
23. Maxfield, Georgiana 3 F W NH

The census taker did not record an entry in the "occupation" column for children under ten, but in another column indicated that Truman and Austin, as well as Abbie and Frances, were atending school. I have not found David True in this census, but a Daniel True, age 20, was working as a farm laborer in the household of Jacob Osgood of Loudon.[23]

Abbie Maxfield married in 1875. Frances married in 1876, and died in 1877 from typhoid fever.[24] David True married in 1877. The 1880 census reported a smaller family consisting of John, 55, Julia, 53, Truman, 18, Austin, 16, and Georgia [called George in the census], 13. John was a farmer, Julia keeping house, Truman worked in a shoe factory, and Austin and "George" attended school.[25]

Truman Maxfield married in 1881, and Austin in 1885. Meanwhile, Julia Maxfield had gotten a divorce from John in October 1883, charging extreme cruelty.[26] Georgia married in 1898, at the age of 31.

The 1900 census reported John Maxfield, 75, living with his son Austin, Austin's wife and five children, in Barnstead.[27] Julia Ann Maxfield, called "Ann" in the census, aged 73, divorced, lived in Pittsfield. the census taker found in her home two grandchildren, Amy, age 8, a daughter of Austin, and Fanny, age eleven months, a daughter of Truman.[28]

John Maxfield died at Barnstead in 1901 from chronic prostatitis.[29] Julia Maxfield was reported in the 1910 census at Pittsfield with her granddaughter Amy, and Amy's husband, Fred. W. Sleeper.[30]

Julia Maxfield died in 1911. She wrote her will on 27 February 1904 and it was proved in Merrimack County Probste Court on 23 May 1911 In it she left the following legacies:[31]
