DAVIS6 MAXFIELD (Jonathan5, Richard4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at Potton, Lower Canada (Quebec), about 1829-30,[1] a son of Jonathan Barnet Maxfield and his wife Mary Fellows. He died at Potton on 15 February 1868.[2] He married at Woodbury, Washington County, Vermont, on 1 January 1851 ELIZA LAIRD.[3] She was born at Vermont about 1829-30, perhaps on 4 July 1829,[4] a daughter of John Laird, Jr., and his wife Eliza Davis. She died on 29 June 1872.[5]
Davis Maxfield grew up on his parent's farm in Quebec, the fourth of six children. Eliza Davis grew up on her parent's farm in Woodbury, the fourth of twelve children of John Laird, Jr., and his second wife Eliza Davis. Davis and Eliza were married at Woodbury on the first day of 1851 by Edward Cleveland, a clergyman.[6] They soon settled in Potton, where they lived with Davis' parents on a farm. The 1861 Canadian census reported them as follows:[7]
L | Name | Occupation | Birthplace | Religion | Age | Sex | M.S. | Other |
38. | Jonathan Maxfield | farmer | NH | Christian | 67 | M | M
39. | Mercy Maxfield | NH | Christian | 68 | F | M
40. | Davis Maxfield | farmer | Lower Canada | Christian | 31 | M | M
41. | Eliza Maxfield | Vermont | No Church | 31 | F | M
42. | Mercy Maxfield | Lower Canada | No Church | 7 | F | school
43. | Clarence Maxfield | Lower Canada | No Church | 5 | M
44. | Ida Maxfield | Lower Canada | No Church | 3 | F |
Davis' parents died in 1863 and 1865 respectively; Davis and Eliza continued to farm in Potton, having four more children.
Davis Maxfield died very suddenly of heart disease in 1868 at the age of 38,[8] leaving a widow of about 38 years, and children ages 13, 11, 10, 6, 3, 3, and 1.
By the time of the 1870 United States census, most of the children had been distributed to the care of Eliza's extended family in Vermont. To trace the lives of these children, it is necessary to look at Eliza's family. John Laird, Jr., and his second wife Eliza Davis had the following children:[9]
The 1870 United States census reported the children of Davis and Eliza Maxfield as follows:
Widow Eliza Maxfield and her youngest child, Jennie, do not appear in the 1870 United States Census. Perhaps they remained in Canada.
The 1871 Canadian census reported Eliza Maxfield and all seven living children at Potton, where they were farming.[63] It is possible that they had all moved back to Canada between the United States census, part of which was taken as late as 15 August 1870, and the Canadian census of 2 April 1871. However, it is more likely that the Canadian census taker included all of the children, considering them to be temporarily absent.
Eliza Maxfield died on 29 June, 1872, and was buried at Leadville Cemetery, Leadville, Quebec,[64] as was her husband. She left children to be cared for by others, ages 17, 16, 15, 11, 8, 8, and 5. Daughter Mary married later in the year of her mother's death, at the age of 18. Clarence married about 1875-6, about 19 years of age, and Ida married in 1880, at the age of 23.
The 1880 census reported the youngest four children scattered in various homes in Marshfield, Woodbury, and Cabot, Vermont:
None of the children of Davis and Eliza settled in Canada, although Clarence was reported at Hatley, Quebec, in the 1881 Canadian census.[68] By 1890 he had returned to the United States.
By the time of the 1900 United States census, Mary (Maxfield) Rushlow, Edwin Maxfield, and Henrietta (Maxfield) Lane were all living in Marshfield. Ida (Maxfield) Laird had died before 1897, but the remainder of her family was at Marshfield. Clarence Maxfield had settled further north, at Brownington, in Orleans County; Henry Maxfield was at Plainfield, the town immediately south of Marshfield; Jennie (Maxfield) Durfee lived at Barre, south of Plainfield.[69]
The Davis Maxfield estate evidently took some time to settle. Nineteen years later, on 23 May 1887, Edwin Maxfield went to Canada to settle the estate.[70]
Ida Irene Maxfield married in 1889 her cousin, Harry L. Laird, son of Henry Sperry Laird and his wife Van Lora Dwinell. Ida probably died sometime before 1897, as Harry Laird in that year married his second cousin, Ida M. Rushlow, daughter of John and Mary (Maxfield) Rushlow.
David Maxfield and his wife Eliza Laird had the following children:
