Sixth Generation

ARTHUR LIVERMORE6 MAXFIELD (Samuel,5-4 Michael,3 John2-1) was born at Gilmanton, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 31 August 1818 a son of Samuel Maxfield and his wife Betsey Huntoon. He died at Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, on 24 August 1890.[1] He married at Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 6 January 1845 ORISSA ANDERSON.[2] She was born at Concord, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 8 October 1821, a daughter of John and Nancy Anderson. She died at Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts,on 21 February 1910.[3]

Arthur Maxfield had a long and creative career in the textile industry, which was summarized in the Massachusetts Encyclopedia of Biography[4]

Arthur Livermore Maxfield was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, August 31, 1818, died in Ashuelot, New Hampshire, August 24, 1890. He was educated in Gilmanton, and there resided until sixteen years of age, when he began working in the cotton mills of Lowell, Massachusetts. His first employment was as bobbin boy in the Boott corporation mill, but so capable was he as a boy and man that in ten years he had been advanced to the post of overseer. About 1844 he became overseer of a cotton mill in Hallowell, Maine, but after a few months there, he returned to Massachusetts to accept a similar position at Chicopee Falls. He remained at the last named town ten years, and during that time, in his capacity of expert, he instructed many Irish girls in the art of weaving, the Chicopee Mill being the first to attract girls of that nationality, and Mr. Maxfield being the first American expert to instruct them. From Chicopee Falls he went to Holyoke as paymaster at the Hampden Mills, remaining ten years, when he organized the Holyoke Warp Mills, with which he was identified for several years. Later he was superintendent of the Stratton Mills at West Swanzey, New Hampshire, there introducing cotton warp manufacture. His last business connection was with the Ashuelot Warp Company, Ashuelot, New Hampshire, which he organized and superintended and of which he was sole proprietor until his death. He was a thoroughly able and efficient cotton manufacturer, and held high position among men of that business. He married Orissa Anderson, born October 8, 1821, died 1916, and had a family of nine children, two of whom died young. Two of his sons, Samuel Williston Maxfield and Fred G. Maxfield, succeeded their father in the management of the Ashuelot Warp Mills and another son, Dr. George A. Maxfield, is of further mention. . . .

Arthur grew up on the family farm in Gilmanton, the second of six children. He left home as a teenager to go to Lowell, the heart of the textile industry. Working his way up from the bottom, he did not marry until the age of 26, when he had reached the position of overseer.

The 1850 Census found this family at Chicopee, Hampden County, consisting of Arthur, 33, mechanic, Orissa, 28, children Mary A., 5, Orissa, 4, and George A., 2, Arthur's sister Mary A., 18, and Violetta Huntoon, 16, perhaps a relative.[5]

The next few years brought much change in this young family. In 1853 they moved to Holyoke, where Arthur had a more important job. A daughter, Clarissa, was born in 1850; as there is no further mention of her, she probably died early. Daughter Orissa died in 1851 at the age of 4. A new daughter, Ella Orissa, was born later that year. Twins were born in 1853, but the male twin soon died. Another daughter, Susan, was born in 1855, but died two days before her first birthday. All together, Orissa gave birth to eleven children in seventeen years, only seven of whom survived to adulthood.

The 1855 Massachusetts state census reported this family at Holyoke, consisting of Arthur, 35, paymaster, Orissa, 33, Mary A., 10, George A., 6, Orissa E., 46 months, and Sarah B., 20 months. The household also included Sarah Slater, 19, perhaps a servant.[6]

In 1860 the federal census found the Arthur Maxfield family at Holyoke, consisting of Arthur, 40 paymaster of a cotton mill, Orissa, 38, Mary A., 15, high school student, George A., 11, Clarissa [Orissa] E., 9, Sarah B., 6, Susan W., 3, and Samuel W., 1.[7]

By the time of the 1865 state census the family was complete, living at Holyoke, and composed of the following:[8]

By the 1870 Census the household had begun to shrink, and the family had moved to Swanzey, Cheshire County (Winchester Post Office). Only the four youngest surviving children were at home. The census reported Arthur, 50, manufacturer, Orissa, 48, keeping house, Sarah, 16, Susan, 13, Samuel 11, and Fred, 8.[9] Mary Ann and Ella remained at Holyoke, living in the large household of William and Elizabeth Whiting. Mary Ann (called here M. Anna), 25, was a music teacher; Ella (here called O. Ella), 19, was a teacher.[10] I haven't found son George in that census.

The next few years brought change, as George married in 1871 and Ella married in 1874. The 1880 Census found the youngest four children, now in their late teens and early twenties, still at home, at Winchester, Cheshire County:[11]

Mary Ann and Ella continued to live in Holyoke. Ella's husband, Charles Davis, was a physician. His child by a previous marriage, William H. Davis, age 8, was part of the household. Mary Ann lived with them and continued to teach music.[12] George was reported at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, living with his wife and her aunt and uncle. At the time George was a student.[13] Samuel, 21, lived in a boarding house in Nashua, Hillsboro County, New Hampshire and worked as a cotton mill operative.[14]

Arthur Livermore Maxfield died at the age of 72, from heart disease.[15]

The 1900 Census reported widow Orissa at the home of her daughter, Ella, in Holyoke. Ella Davis, widow, 48, was listed as a physician; Her mother Orissa, 79, had her occupation listed as "at sea." The household also included Arthur D. Maxfield, 12, son of Fred.[16] Annie (Mary Ann), 54 lived alone at Holyoke.[17] George, 50, lived in Holyoke with his wife, where he had established his dental practice.[18] Samuel, 41, boarded at Ashuelot village, Winchester, where he continued the family tradition as a cotton manufacturer.[19] Fred, 36, also lived at Ashuelot village and worked as a cotton warp manufacturer. With him were his wife Carrie, 30, and their three young daughters, Gladys, 10, Marjorie, 8, and Ruth, 6.[20]

Orissa Anderson Maxfield died at Holyoke at the age of 88, from inflamation of ther stomach.[21]

Mary Ann Maxfield continued to live at Holyoke and never married. She was described in 1910 as a music teacher and in 1920 as a self-employed journalist.[22]

Ella (Maxfield) Davis continued to live in Holyoke with her general practice of medicine. The 1910 Census reported her there with her niece, Fred's daughter, Marjorie.[23] The 1920 Census reported her as a physician and surgeon, age 68, living with niece Marjorie, 28, a record clerk for a writing paper company.[24] In 1930 Ella and Marjorie were at the same address. Ella, 79, was listed as a physician; Marjorie 34, was stenographer for a paper mill office.[25]

Samuel Williston Maxfield married in 1905, at the age of 46, Vera Watkins, age 20. They settled in Springfield, Hampden County. The 1910 Census reported Samuel a salesman of sewing machines and Vera a canvasser for trading stamps.[26] In 1920 Samuel lived in a lodging house - no mention of Vera. He worked as a sewing machine adjuster for a seweing machine factory.[27] The 1930 Census reported Samuel W. Maxfield, 69, divorced, working as a repair man for sewing machines.[28] The 1940 Census reported him with the same employment.[29]
