Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JONATHAN6 MAXFIELD (Abraham5, Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 5 January 1810, son of Abraham Russell Maxfield and his wife Sylvia Tucker.[1] He died at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 3 August 1889.[2] Jonathan Maxfield married at Dartmouth (intentions published at Dartmouth on 22 January 1832) on 12 February 1832 DELIDA SNELL.[3] She was born at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts in 1801, a child of George and Olive Snell, and died at New Bedford on 14 August 1888.[4] She was sometimes called "Delia" or "Delila."

Jonathan grew up in Dartmouth, the third of eight children. Jonathan Maxfield was a butcher of Dartmouth in the 1850 and 1855 censuses, a laborer in the 1860 census, a farmer in 1865, a "hostler" in 1870, and a gardner in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1880.

The 1840 Census reported the Jonathan Maxfield family at Dartmouth, consisting of a male-female couple in their 30s, a young woman between 10 and 15, and a boy under five.[5] This would fit the information we have on the family except that they placed daughter Lucy in an older category than she belonged.

The 1850 Census follows:[6]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Jonathan Maxfield 40 M butcher $600 Mass
Deliah Maxfield 48 F Mass
Lucy S. Maxfield 16 F Mass
Abraham R. Maxfield 13 M Mass school

The 1855 Massachusetts Census reported the family at Dartmouth consisting of Jonathan Maxfield, 46, a butcher, Delila C., 54, Lucy P., 23, Abram R., 18, a laborer, and a six month old male infant.[7] This infant would be Lucy's baby, born out of wedlock.

In 1860 the Jonathan Maxfield family of Dartmouth was recorded as follows:[8]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
Jonathan Maxfield 51 M laborer $4000 $200 Mass
Delila Maxfield 58 F Mass
Lucy S. Maxfield 27 F tailoress Mass
Abraham R. Maxfield 23 M laborer Mass
Edgar H. Maxfield 5 M Mass school
Susan B. Maxfield 38 F Mass
William M. Maxfield 46 M master mariner $1800 $2200 Mass

After listing Jonathan, his wife and his two children, the Census then listed his daughter's son, his sister-in-law and his brother.

The 1865 Census listed only Jonathan, 55, farmer, Delina, 63, born Fall River, and Lucy, 30.[9] Abraham, who had married in 1862, was reported at New Bedford with his wife Caroline and their first two children.[10]

The 1870 Census reported Jonathan and Delia in Dartmouth, North Dartmouth Post Office, with daughter Lucy, dressmaker, and her son Edgar, in school.[11] Son Abraham, who worked at a flour mill, lived at New Bedford with his wife and five children.[12] The 1880 Census reported Jonathan, Delida and Lucy, dressmaker, in New Bedford, with 13 year old Nora Tripp.[13] Abraham, now a clerk in carpet rooms, lived in New Bedford with his wife, five children, and the husband of her eldest child.[14]

Delida died from apoplexy in 1888.[15] Jonathan died a year later from senile gangrene.[16]

Jonathan Maxfield and his wife Delida Snell had the following children:

  1. LUCY S.7 MAXFIELD b. at New Bedford on 16 August 1832
  2. ABRAHAM R.7 MAXFIELD b. at Dartmouth on 16 January 1837
