Lucy Maxfield never married, but she had an illegitimate child in 1855. Many years later, when that child was married, he would record his father's name as William. Whether Lucy's child knew the name of his father, or whether he looked upon his Uncle William, who lived in the same household, as his father, we do not know. In the 1860 Census, Lucy and her child were living with her parents, and Lucy was working as a tailoress. She continued to live with her parents at Dartmouth, recorded as a dressmaker in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.
The 1900 Census (638:15A) listed Lucy, dress maker, living alone at 14 Allen Street, New Bedford. In 1910 she resided with her grandson Jonathan Maxfield, at New Bedford, and she continued to work as a dressmaker. Lucy Maxfield died at 68 Chancery Street, New Bedford, on 13 November 1928, age 96 years, 2 months, and 28 days (Rural Cem NB I-48). She was buried ar Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, on 15 November in the same lot as her father (Rural Cem NB I-48).
