RIMMON6 MAXFIELD (Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont, on 18 February 1815, a child of Henry and Minerva Maxfield. He died at Fairfax, Franklin County, on 29 January 1889.[1] He married first before 1847 (birth of child) MARY POTTER, who was born at Milton, Chittenden County, Vermont, on 7 July 1826 and died at Elmore, Lamoille County, Vermont, on 20 October 1876.[2] Rimmon married second at Underhill, Chittenden County, on 30 June 1878 MARIA (LEARNED) AUSTIN,[3] a daughter of Joseph Leonard, who was born at Milton on 4 January 1804 and died at Fairfax on 22 July 1895.[4]
Rimmon Maxfield served in the Army from 21 February 1840 to 21 February 1845. He was a private, stationed at Fort Preble, near Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. During this time the "Aroostook War," a border dispute between Maine and New Brunswick, was resolved without a fight. Rimmon was described as having blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, height 5' 9".[5]
On 24 August 1846 Sanford and Rimmon Maxfield, sons of Henry and Minerva Maxfield, transfered a half lot in Milton. In consideration the Town discharged Sanford and Rimmon from a suit pending in Chittenden County. Sanford and Rimmon were released from liability to support parents.[6]
Rimmon and Minerva Maxfield appear to have lived at Crown Point, Essex County, New York, from 1850 to 1855, according to the birth informatiom for their children. I have not found him in the 1850 Census.
The 1860 census reported this family at Milton as follows:[7]

Rimmon and Mary's first child, Ellen, died in 1865 from typhoid fever.[9]
On 11 April 1867, Rimmon Maxfield published the following notice in the Burlington Free Press:[10]

The 1870 census reported the Rimmon Maxfield family at Cadys Falls Post Office, Elmore, as follows:[11]

There is no explanation for how Lucina aged only 2 years in a decade. The other children were all working and dispersed in other homes. Sanford, 19, was a farm laborer in the household of Ward and Mary Harris, Morristown, Lamoille County (Cady Falls Post Office).[12] George, 19, was a farm laborer in the household of Darman and Jennie Bridgman of Woodbury, Washington County, Vermont.[13] Persis, listed as 13, was a domestic servant in the home of John and Ellen Batchelder, of Barre, Washington County.[14] Emma, 15, was a domestic servant in the home of Charles and Eliza Parker, of Elmore (Cadys Falls Post Office).[15]
Mary (Potter) Maxfield died in 1876 with paralysis.[16] Twenty months later widower Rimmon Maxfield married widow Marie (Learned) Austin. He was 63 years old, she was 74.
The 1880 census reported Rimon Maxfield, age 66, and his wife Mariah, age 76, living at Fairfax, Vermont. Rimon was a farmer, Mariah was keeping house, both of them and all of their parents were born in Vermont.[17] Sanford, married in 1876, was reported in 1880 farming and living with his wife in Morristown.[18] George, married in 1879, lived in 1880 with his wife, her parents, and her child by a previous marriage, at Underhill; George and his father-in-law were carpenters.[19] Persis, married in 1876, lived in 1880 with her husband and their son at Jericho.[20] Emma, married in 1876, lived in 1880 with her husband and daughter at Morristown.[21] Lucena, 18, was a servant in the home of George and Jane Smith of Jericho in 1880;[22] five months after the census she would marry her first cousin, Heman Maxfield.
Rimmond Maxfield died at the age of 73 from chronic diarrhea.[23] His second wife, Maria, died at the age of 91 with general debility.[24]
Rimmon Maxfield and his first wife Mary had the following children:
