Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

WILLIAM McCRILLIS6 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Durham, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 25 December 1793 to Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Jane McCrillis.[1] He died at China, Kennebec County, Maine, on 4 January 1867.[2] He married at Camden, Hancock County, Maine, on 17 January 1819 MARY PARKMAN,[3] who was born at Duckstrap, Camden, on 9 November 1798,[4] and died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 17 July 1889.[5]

The first of eleven children, William moved several times with his family of origin. They lived in Durham until William was about 14, then lived in Union, Lincoln County, Maine for a few years, and when William was 16 they began to reside at Appleton, Lincoln County. During the War of 1812 William served in the Massachusetts militia in Capt. Asher Palmer's Company, and in Captain Noyes Payson's Company.[6]

Married in 1819, the 1820 Census reported the William Maxfield family at Searsmont, Hancock County, consisting of a male 26-44 (William 26) a female 16-25 (Mary 21) and a male 10-15 (unidentified). William was a farmer.[7]

The 1830 Census and every census thereafter reported the William Maxfield family at China. That 1830 Census reported the couple in their 30s (William 36, Mary 31), and 4 daughters, two 5-10 (Sarah 9, Mary 7), and two under 5 (Ann 4, Lydia 1).[8]

Two of their children died in November of 1833: Ann, seven years old, and Sarah, thirteen. In 1840 William was reported in "manufacture and trade" at China. The family consisted of a couple in their 40s (William 46, Mary 41), a girl 15-20 (Mary 17), a girl 10-15 (Lydia 11), two boys 5-10 (William 9, Edwin 5), and a boy under 5 (Henry 1).[9]

Daughter Mary married in 1847. Her husband, William Chase Stevens, was a Mesthodist minister, who would eventually serve churches in Bethel, Lock Mills, Bryant's Pond, Cumberland, Searboro, Peru, Durham, Hartford, Livermore, York Village, and New Portland, Maine.[10]

The William and Mary Maxfield family was counted in China, Maine, in the 1850 Census as follows:[11]

Lydia W. Maxfield 21 F Me

In 1860 the family was recorded in China, Maine, as follows:[12]

Mary Maxfield 61 F Me

Edwin Maxfield 24 M merchant Me

However, two sons, Edwin and Henry, appear to have also been counted elsewhere. In Benton, Kennebec County, Edwin A. Maxfield, 24, shoemaker, was recorded in the household of Daniel B. Abbott.[13] "H. W. Macksfield," probably our Henry W., was also recorded in Benton, in the household of David (age 50) and Betsey E. (age 48) Hanson.[14]

Edwin, Henry and Dana all fought in the Civil War. Dana enlisted on 18 September 1861 in Company I of the Massachusetts 22nd Regiment. He was wounded at Gaines' Mills on 14 April 1863 and received a disability discharge.[15] Henry enlisted on 1 October 1862 in Company G of the Maine 24th Infantry Regiment. He was mustered out on 25 August 1863.[16] Edwin, who married in July of 1863, enlisted on 14 July 1864 in Company G of the Maine 7th Infantry Regiment, transferred to Company G of the Maine 1st Infantry Regiment on 21 August. The military record states he was mustered out on 28 June 1865.[17] But his death record states he died at Washington, D. C. on 18 August 1864 from congestion of the brain.

William married in 1861, Edwin in 1863, and Henry about 1869-70. However the father, William McCrillis Maxfield, died in 1867.

Son William had moved to Phniladelphia by 1867, where he worked in the textile industry as a pattern maker. In the 1870 Census he was reported there with his wife, two children and his mother, Mary Maxfield, 70.[18] Daughter Lydia was reported at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachuestts, 35, seamstress, in the Massachusetts Hospital.[19] She died on Christmas Day of that year, at Boston, with synovitis, which she had for four years, and ryaemia, which she had for 3 weeks.[20] Henry, 32, house carpenter, lived at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, with his new wife.[21] Dana, 29, was a hardware merchant at Toulon, Stark County, Illinois.[22] That might seem far away, but it was where his Uncle Oren had made a home.

Dana moved on further west, and died at Wellington, Sumner County, Kansas. According to the death record he was "shot by a desperado."[23] Mary (Parkman) Maxfield died at Philadelphia in 1889, aged 90 years.

William McCrillis Maxfield and his wife Mary Parkman had the following children:

  1. SARAH JANE7 MAXFIELD b. at Searsmont on 27 December 1820, d. at China on 12 November 1833.[24]
