Maxfield, William S., Priv. res: New Bedford, 29, seaman, enlisted Aug 21, 1862, mustered Aug 31, 1862, transferred Jul 31, 1864 as Sergt to Navy; see U.S. Navy; 3d Regt Mass Vol Cavalry, Co. AFollowing the War, William settled in the New York City area. He married TERESA AMANDA WEBSTER at New York City on 4 July 1867 (NB Merc M 788). He was of New Bedford, she of New York. Teresa was born at New York City in August 1845 (1900 Census; 1845 in 1920 Census, 1845/6 in 1870 Census; 1846/7 in 1880 Census). They appeared in the 1870 Census (988:562B) in New York City as follows:

Olive and Lillian were attending school. Based on the birth places and ages of the children, we can say that the family moved from New York to New Jersey between 1876 and 1879. In the following years the family suffered several losses. In July, 1883, 12 year old Lillian and 9 year old William died. A sixth child, Clarence, born in 1886, lived only fourteen months.
The 1895 New Jersey State Census (NJ Cen 1895:81:69) reported the family at Jersey City consisting of William, Theresa, Charles and Edward. At the time of the 1900 Census (979:146), this evolving family was still at Jersey City, at 200 Monticello Avenue:

The census record also indicated that Teresa had six children, of whom three were living, and that Edward and Susan had been married one year.
William S. Maxfield, age 76, died at 157 Miller Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, on 21 January 1909 (NY Times 23 Jan 1909, p. 9). Teresa was reported in 1910 and 1920 censuses as a widow, living with her son Edward in Brooklyn.
