Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

GEORGE LEWIS7 MAXFIELD (Minor6, probably Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1 ) was born at New York about 1837/8 (1870 census; 1830/1 Pennsylvania in 1910 census; 1832/3 Pennsylvania in 1880 census; 1838/9 in 1850 census), probably a child of Minor and Elvira Maxfield. A confusing factor is this: The 1880 and 1910 censuses give George an earlier birth and locate it in Pennsylvania, but the location, wife, and first child agree with the George Maxfield of the 1870 census. The George of the 1870 census agrees with the information on the son of Minor in the 1850 census, and is located in the vicinity of other members of that family. George probably moved to Virginia with his parents some time between 1845 and 1848, based on the birth states of his siblings.

George Maxfield married EDMONIA ELIZABETH TOLSON probably around 1869/70 (1910 census). She was born at Virginia about 1846/7 (1870 census; 1840/1 in 1910 census; 1847/8 in 1880 census).

The 1870 (1673:1:376B) census reported this family at Nokesville Post Office, Coles Township, Prince William County, Virginia:

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Maxfield, George 32 M W farmer $200 NY
Maxfield, Edmonia 23 F W keeping house VA
Maxfield, Fonso 1 F W VA

"Fonso," or Alphonso, is reported as male in later censuses.

The 1880 census (1391:536B) reported what appears to be this family at Rock Hill Township, Stafford County, Virginia:

Name Related MS Sex Race Age B Occupation FB MB
George Maxfield self M M W 37 PA farmer PA PA
Edmonia E. Maxfield wife M F W 32 VA keeping house VA VA
Fonzo Maxfield son S M W 12 VA at home VA VA
George H. Maxfield son S M W 7 VA VA VA

The 1910 census again found this family at Rock Hill District, Stafford County:

Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, George L. M W 79 M1 PA PA PA farmer
general farm
Maxfield, Elizabeth wife F W 69 M1 VA VA VA none
Maxfield, Harold grandson M W 18 S VA VA VA laborer
home farm
Maxfield, Clara granddaughter F W 14 S VA VA VA none

This record also indicated that George and Elizabeth had been married fifty years, and that she had three children, of whom two were living. Harold and Clara were the children of Alfonzo. This family's record was followed after five intervening households by "Heater" (evidently son George H.) and Hattie Maxfield.

George L. Maxfield may have died on January 1914 (IGI).

George Lewis and Edmonia Elizabeth Maxfield had the following children:

  1. ALFONZO8 MAXFIELD b. at Virginia about 1868/9
  2. GEORGE H.8 MAXFIELD b. at Virginia about 1872/3
  3. RICHARD8 MAXFIELD b. at Virginia about 1872/3
