DAVID7 MAXFIELD (Nathaniel6, Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Albion, Maine, on 4 July 1826 (VR Me), a child of Nathaniel Maxfield and his wife Adah Arnold.

The 1850 Census (266:279) reported David Maxfield at the Town of Greenbush in Penobscot County, Maine, in the household of John (age 51)and Margaret S. (age 48) Frees. David, age 24, was called a farmer. David Maxfield married ANNE FREEZE (NMGR 7:87) probably before 1853.

By the 1860 census (229:800) David and Anne Maxfield had moved to Goshen Township, Stark County, Illinois. David, 34, was a farmer, with real estate of $2600 and personal estate of $350. The rest of the family consisted of Ann M., 27, John F., 6, George W., 4, Franklin, 3, and Mary J., six months. David, Ann and John had been born in Maine, George, Franklin and Mary in Illinois. John and George had attended school. Based on the ages and birth places of the children, the family had migrated West in 1854 or 1855.

By the time of the 1870 Census (278:1:372A) this family at Goshen Township, LaFayette Post Office, Stark County, Illinois, had grown:

Anne (Freeze) Maxfield died about 1871/2. This is based on a biography of her son-in-law which states Helen was nine years old when her mother died (Snyder bio).

David Maxfield married MARY B. STURGIS about 1874/5. Mary was born at Illinois in July 1840 (1900 Census). By the time of the 1880 Census (372:466C) David and Mary were living in Monrovia, Atchison County, Kansas. David was a "huckster":

They evidently moved to Kansas before 1876 and the birth of Fred to this second marriage. They moved to Kansas City, Kansas, about 1881 (when Fred was four years old).

The week before Christmas, 1891, David Maxfield of Kansas City fell in a hole in an alley at Atchison, Kansas, between Main and Commercial Streets. He sued the city of Atchison for $3000 for personal injury. On June 8, 1892, the claim was rejected (Atch Champ).

The 1895 Kansas Census (KS C 1895: 167:35) reported David Maxfield, 68, laborer, and Mary B. Maxfield, 54, housewife, living at Kansas City, Kansas. The household included son Fred, 18, and four other persons apparently unrelated to them.

The 1900 census (504:2:77) reported David, born July 1825, and Mary, born July 1840, living with his son Frank at Kansas City, Kansas. David Maxfield died at Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas, on 6 September 1900 (KS D)

    • b. at Kansas abt 1876/7
    • d. at Manila, Philippines, on 12 June 1999 (Atch Globe, 29 Jun 1899, p. 4)
News has been received definitely that it was Fred Maxfield who died near Manila of diphtheria. The name of Fred Warfield was given in the war reports. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Maxfield, of Kansas City, Kansas, are his parents. Mrs. Mark Snyder of this place, and Mrs. Freeman Scovill, of Arrington, are sisters of the deceased. He was born near Monrovia twenty-two years ago, but his parents moved to Kansas City when he was four years old, and he had always resided there till he enlisted in the Twentieth Kansas, about a year since.
