Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

NATHANIEL6 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Durham, Strafford County, New Hampshire onApril 20, 1799, a child of Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Jane McCrillis.[1] He died at China, Kennebec County, Maine, on 14 November 1884.[2] He married ADAH ARNOLD. She was born at Windsor, Kennebec County, on 14 February 1803 and died at China on 15 February 1892.[3]

Nathaniel, the second of ten children, moved with his family of origin. He grew up in Durham until about the age of seven; lived at Union, Lincoln County, Maine, for a few years, and was at Appleton, Lincoln County, by the age of eleven. Later, as an adult, hr moved to China.

Nathaniel Maxfield and Adah Arnood married probably before 1822, when their first child was born. The 1830 Census reported this family at China consisting of a male 30-39 (Nathaniel 31), a female 20-29 (Adah 27), two males 5-9 (John 8, Joseph 6), and a male and female under 5 (David 4, Adeline 2).[4]

In 1840 the census reported this family at Albion, Kennebec County, with two persons engaged in agriculture. The family consisted of a male 40-50 (Nathaniel 41), a female 30-40 (Adah 37), two males and a female 15-20 (John 18, Joseph 16, female not identified), a male 10-15 (David 14, Adeline 11), a male and a female 5-10 (Sarah 9, Thomas 7), and a male and a female under 5 (Charles 3, Jane 2).[5] As you can see, the census data comes close to describing the family as we know it, but with some variations. This could be explained by an unrelated person in the family and Adeline in another home, or the census taker could have mistaken Adeline's age.

The Nathaniel Maxfield family of Albion was recorded in the 1850 Census as follows:[6]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Nathaniel Maxfield 51 M farmer $ 800 NH
Adah Maxfield 47 F Me
Charles H. Maxfield 14 M Me school
Frederic Maxfield 8 M Me school
Jane Maxfield 11 F Me school

The older children had left home by 1850. John, who married in 1845, was reported at Stark County, Illinois, with his wife and three children.[7] Stark County is where his uncle Oren had settled. Joseph probably married before 1849, and was reported at Warren, Lincoln County, with his wife.[8] Their one child was born and died in 1849. David was farming at Greenbush, Penobscot County, Maine, and lived in the home of John and Margaret Frees.[9] Adeline had married in 1849. Thomas, 17, was farming at Warren, in the housrhold of Isaac and Elizabeth Hislar.[10] Frances and Mary probably died in infancy or early childhood.

The Nathaniel Maxfield family was counted in China, Maine in the 1860 Census as follows:[11]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
Nathaniel Maxfield 61 M farmer $2000 $1039 NH
Adah Maxfield 57 F Me
Charles H. Maxfield 23 M farmer Me
Jane Maxfield 20 F Me school
Frederic Maxfield 18 M farmer Me school

Elsewhere in the 1860 Census: John was at Goshen, Stark County, with his wife and three children.[12] David had moved west to Goshen, where he farmed with his wife and four children.[13] Adeline had married for the second time in 1856. Sarah married in 1851. Thomas married in 1855 and lived in the factory boarding house of Albert Hussey at Vassalboro, Kennebec County, with his wife. Also in that boarding house was Frederick Maxfield, 18, a flocker.[14] Charles had moved to Goshen and lived with his brother John.[15]

Three sons of this family fought in the Civil War. Thomas A. Maxfield was a 1st Lieutenant in Company D of the Maine 21st Infantry, from 1 october 1862 to 25 August 1863.[16] Charles H. Maxfield was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company U of the new york 36th Infantry Regiment from 15 May 1861 to 13 June 1861. He later re-enlisted, in Company H of New York Marine Light Artillery Battery, and was mustered out on 24 July 1863. The enlistment record reported his residence as New York City.[17] Frederick Maxfield enlisted on 1 October 1862 in Company G of the Maine 24th Infantry Regiment. He died in service on 18 August 1863.[18]

Nathaniel and Adah Maxfield were reported as a household of two in China in the 1870 Census. Nathaniel, age 71, was a farmer with real estate of $900 and a personal estate of $500. Adah, age 66, was keeping house.[19] Of the children, John and David were at Goshen,[20] Thomas died in 1864, Charles had moved to Sheridan, Poweshiek County, Iowa (Tama City Post Office), where he farmed with his wife and three children,[21] Jane had married in 1862.

Nathaniel and Adah were reported in China again in the 1880 Census, ages 81 and 76 respectively.[22]

Nathaniel Maxfield died at China on 14 November 1884. Adah Maxfield died there on 15 February 1892, from La Grippe.[23]
