CHARLES HENRY7 MAXFIELD (Nathaniel6, Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Alboin, Maine, on 8 August 1836 (VR Me), a child of Nathaniel Maxfield and his wife Adah Arnold. Charles was a farmer, still living with his parents in Maine, at the time of the 1860 Census. However, when he enlisted in the Army to fight in the Civil War, in August, 1862, he was from Chicago, Illinois. H. D. French noted the following about his military service:

Aug 23, 1862 enlisted in Civil War, marine artillery, Co. F of Chicago, service in North Carolina and South Carolina; Honorably discharged Aug 1863.

Immediately upon his return, Charles H. Maxfield married HELEN FULLER, of Saxon Township, Illinois, at Stark County, Illinois, on 23 August 1863 (IL M). Her parents were Jehiel Fuller and Emeline Fellon. Helen was born at Saxon Township on 10 April 1840 (F).

Elizabeth Wright claimed that after marriage, Charles and Helen Maxfield moved to the state of Washington (NMGR 7:87); however, Harry French indicated they lived in Stark County until 1871, when they moved to Powashiek County, Iowa (F). At least one child died there, in Sheridan Township, in 1878. The 1880 Census (362:439C) reported the family in Sheridan Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa:
